Meet one of our Freshwater Marsh and Riparian Cooridor residents, the Lesser Goldfinch! Lesser Goldfinch can be found feasting on seeds and grains, just like this one feasting on the seeds of a post-bloom Black Sage! They are only 9-11 centimeters long and weigh up to 11 grams- about the weight of one pencil. These stub-billed birds are identifiable by their bright yellow fronts and darker bac...

Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate Ballona Freshwater Marsh for its accessibility and potential for wildlife viewing, particularly birdwatching. However, some find the trail surface challenging and note the lack of shade and distant wildlife. The recent restoration of the Jefferson Trail has been positively received. TikTokReddit

"Nice place for a short walk, but don’t expect to see too much wildlife or wetlands.

It’s one long path on flat land. Not a challenging walk at all, though the ground is covered in wood chippings, which might be rough for anyone that needs a paved surface.

Park across the street at the sports park on Bluff Creek Dr. (next to the elementary school) and walk over to the entrance on Lincoln, right at the intersection with Bluff Creek Dr. There’s also an entrance at Lincoln & Jefferson, and one further west on Jefferson.

There were lots of dragonflies and wildflowers. Larger fauna like birds are farther away in the fenced off areas. Could make for some nice photography if you have a long lens!

Bring sunscreen and a hat because there is no shade or cover along the path at all. There are a couple benches for a quick rest, but they get very hot in the sun.

I’m glad this already is protected from disturbance or development, but it doesn’t make for the most interesting nature hike. But it’s still nice for people that want an easy hour-long walk."

"I visit this place once every one or two months. It's a good place for walking. I take my camera with me and take pictures as I walking. The flowers that bloom and the fruits that grow change with the seasons, and I enjoy discovering them. Some people say that places that do not have any special or noticeable landmarks are boring, but I don't think so. Recently, the deck in the northwest part has been renovated and a telescope has been installed."

Ambassador Katsushika

"This is a wonderful little walking area for any visitor! It does get quite loud with the large road next to it, but I was so impressed by the amount of wildlife that was thriving here. Not only did we see lots of waterfowl, but an Osprey and a Red Tailed Hawk too. We went in December, and it wasn’t too cold, but it was good to bring a jacket. I really liked this little area and hope to come back again soon!"
