Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Quoddy Head State Park for its breathtaking coastal scenery, the iconic West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, and unique natural features like the Arctic Bog. The easternmost location offers a special sunrise experience. Some note the unpaved parking and occasional spotty cell service, but overall, it's considered a must-visit gem on the Maine coast.

"West Quoddy Head Lighthouse and State Park is absolutely gorgeous! We only stopped briefly to see the lighthouse and snap a photo at the easternmost point of the United States, but it’s clear this spot deserves much more time. The park has beautiful trails and breathtaking views that make it worth a longer visit. Highly recommend adding it to your Maine trip!"

"A beautiful lighthouse at the end of the United States. A beautiful little park that you pay on the honor system. They have a bathroom located about 100 yards from the lighthouse. The lighthouse is handicap accessible, and there is parking closer to it. This lighthouse is a must visit if you’re on the east coast of northern Maine with great views of the Bay of Fundy and Canada across the way. This is a great place to enjoy and there are small hikes. This is a no drone zone. If you’re coming here, don’t forget to bring a few dollars with you so you can make a donation to get in. If you’re parking, there’s plenty of parking spots, but it is not paved just in case you like your fancy car."

Abner Bonilla

"My mom and I visited Quoddy Head State Park on Monday, September 29th. The building was closed because of the head lighthouse was the need of more painting but we spent a good time to look at the lighthouse, the surroundings, and the ocean! Also, we went out for a walk on Inland Trail and saw the Sail Rock and Grand Manal Channel of Canada. It was another great state park to see. It was very quiet being there but we saw a bunch of people there. Also, there’s a lack of WiFi connection because our phones thought we were in the Canada. We surprisingly didn’t know this state park is also at the easternmost point of the United States of America!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Iconic West Quoddy Head Lighthouse

The West Quoddy Head Lighthouse is the undeniable star of Quoddy Head State Park. Its distinctive red-and-white stripes make it one of Maine's most recognizable landmarks. Constructed in 1858, the current tower stands as an active aid to navigation, guiding ships through the Quoddy Narrows. The lighthouse is perched dramatically on coastal cliffs, offering stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Bay of Fundy. It's a popular spot for photographers and visitors alike, symbolizing the rugged beauty of the Maine coast. Instagram+1

Visitors can get up close to the lighthouse and learn about its history through interpretive signs. While the interior is not typically open to the public, the surrounding grounds provide excellent vantage points for photos and appreciating its unique architecture. The lighthouse's location at the easternmost point of the continental United States adds a special significance, making it one of the first places to see the sunrise in the country. Instagram

Exploring Quoddy Head's Unique Ecosystems

Quoddy Head State Park is not just about the lighthouse and coastal views; it also harbors fascinating and rare ecosystems. The Arctic Bog Boardwalk is a must-visit for anyone interested in natural history. This mile-long loop trail leads visitors through a coastal plateau bog, a remnant of arctic tundra found surprisingly far south. The atmosphere here is often described as otherworldly and mysterious, with unique flora adapted to the cool, damp conditions. Instagram+1

Beyond the bog, the park's coastal trails wind through a landscape shaped by the powerful tides of the Bay of Fundy. You'll encounter dwarf trees, sculpted by the wind and salt spray, and a variety of coastal vegetation. The park's location also means it's a haven for diverse wildlife, including numerous seabirds and marine mammals visible from the shore. Exploring these varied habitats offers a deeper appreciation for the natural wonders of the Downeast coast. Instagram+1

Sunrise at the Easternmost Point

Being the easternmost point of the continental United States, Quoddy Head State Park offers a truly special experience: witnessing the sunrise before almost anywhere else on the mainland. Many visitors make a point to arrive well before dawn to secure a prime viewing spot and experience the magic of the first light. The dramatic coastal setting, with the lighthouse silhouetted against the dawn sky, creates an unforgettable scene. Instagram+1

However, it's important to be prepared for potential fog. The coastal Maine weather can be unpredictable, and fog is common, especially in the mornings. While fog can obscure distant views, it also lends a mystical and atmospheric quality to the landscape, creating unique photographic opportunities. Even if the sun isn't fully visible, the soft, diffused light can be incredibly beautiful. TikTokInstagram
