"We drove 2.5 hours Saturday October 18, 2025 for a scheduled [paid in advance] 12 noon tour. The museum was closed! No one answered the phone and I couldn't leave a message because the memory was full. I emailed the museum as well as two board members. This is unacceptable!

I updated my review from the original one star to three stars. As I was leaving Lynchburg, I received a call from Shaun Spencer-Hester. She was enroute to the museum. It appears there was a mix-up/oversite. Normally the museum closes for the season November 1st, however this year it closed a month earlier on October 1st and the staff failed to check the calendar to see if tours had been booked/scheduled in October. I turned my car around and drove back to the museum and was there when Shaun arrived. In spite of the ~1.5 hour delay, the tour was informative and insightful...more special hearing and seeing Anne and Edward Spencer's legacy through their granddaughter.

"I've enjoyed watching the gardens evolve over the years. It might just be the prettiest I've ever seen it. Loving care and family dedication to Anne is around every corner. A lovely quiet spot. I love the recent addition of the glass poetry and family photos on the trellis. I'm not exactly sure if you can tour the garden any time like you used to be able to do - one signs says guided tours need to be scheduled, another says garden open always. We were not kicked out but were unsure if we should be there!"

"My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful tour from Anne Spencer's granddaughter. The stories she shared of visiting her grandmother, the Harlem renaissance poet and civil rights activist, and playing in the gardens brought back sweet memories of visiting my own grandmother and playing on her front porch.
The house, located in a historic neighborhood, is almost completely intact with the original furniture, family photos and notes tacked up on the kitchen cabinet. The garden is peaceful, shady and enclosed in a way that allows you to lose the sense of being on a city lot.
You need to make an appointment to tour the house but the gardens are open to the public."
