Mākena State Park ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🏝️ On the south side of the cinder cone are Oneloa (Big Beach) and Puu Olai (Little Beach). Oneloa is also known as breakneck beach and there are signs warning of high risk of spinal injuries due to the shore break there. We didn’t swim at that one but it was beautiful. Then we climbed up over a small ridge to Puu Olai where the waters were a little calmer and we were...

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the incredible panoramic views from the summit of Pu'u Olai Cinder Cone, calling the hike rewarding despite its unmaintained and steep nature. The unique coastal scenery, including black sand beaches, is a major draw. However, the loose, thorny trails require sturdy footwear and caution, and some find the parking fees a bit steep.

"Great views after a nice hike up. You can see excellent views of West Maui, Haleakala, Molokini, and all of Kihei as well as South to the old lava flows. Be careful when walking many of the trees in that area have long thorns that will go through the bottom of your shoe. Parking: as of August 2021 if you drive into the parking lot it cost $10 for the car and $5 for each person we parked out on the road and just walked in."

"Pu'uolai Cinder Cone is a beautiful hike. It took about 30 minutes to climb up, walk all the way around the crater, and walk down. There are also many trails that branch out to explore, but I did not have enough time to do many of them. I believe one goes down to the rocky beach in front. The climb is steep and loose and very narrow and off-camber in many spots and if you're uncomfortable with it in the first minute, then you probably shouldn't do the rest. It does get hot up on the cone, since there's not much shade, so definitely do it in the early morning or evening. To access, go down the gravel access road to Oneuli beach. Soon after the beach comes into view, there is a metal post on the left side of the road that you can see in one picture. Here is where you turn. You can park on the side of the main road outside the gravel road, or drive down the gravel road and pay $10 for parking. I highly recommend this hike in the right time of day for those confident in their experience."

"A fairly easy 30 minute hike with amazing views. The trail is steep with loose rocks, so NO SADALS! Seriously, sturdy shoes only for this one. Lots of plants and birds to observe during the hike."

Navigating the Trails

The trails at Pu'u Olai Cinder Cone are not officially maintained, which means you won't find manicured paths or clear signage. Instead, expect steep, loose scree and narrow, uneven sections. Reddit Many visitors report that the constant foot traffic has flattened out some of the brush, making it easier to find a route. However, this also means the trails can be quite eroded and challenging. It's crucial to wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip, as the loose rocks can easily cause slips and falls. Reddit Some hikers also recommend a walking stick for added stability. Reddit

Be aware that thorny plants are prevalent in the area, and their long thorns can easily penetrate the soles of inadequate footwear. Reddit While the main path to the summit is often described as a 30-minute climb, exploring the crater rim and any branching trails can extend your time. Always be mindful of your footing and the terrain, especially if you're uncomfortable with steep or unstable surfaces. Reddit

The Geological Significance

Pu'u Olai is a prominent cinder cone volcano on the southwestern coast of Maui, formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago. Its distinctive shape and the surrounding landscape offer a glimpse into the powerful geological forces that shaped the Hawaiian Islands. The cone itself is composed of scoria, a volcanic rock that forms during explosive eruptions. Instagram

Standing atop Pu'u Olai provides a unique vantage point to appreciate the volcanic origins of Maui. You can observe the dramatic coastline, the vast Pacific Ocean, and the island's diverse topography, from the lush slopes of Haleakala to the arid lava fields. The cone's proximity to the ocean also means you can see the interplay between volcanic landforms and marine erosion, creating a dynamic and ever-changing environment. Instagram

Coastal Wonders: Beaches and Views

Pu'u Olai Cinder Cone overlooks some of Maui's most stunning beaches. To its west lies Oneuli Beach, often referred to as 'Black Sand Beach,' a striking contrast to the golden sands found elsewhere on the island. Instagram Further south is Oneloa, famously known as 'Big Beach,' a long, wide stretch of sand with powerful shore break, earning it the nickname 'Breakneck Beach' due to the risk of spinal injuries. Instagram While Big Beach is beautiful to behold, swimming there requires extreme caution. Instagram

The hike up Pu'u Olai offers unparalleled views of these beaches and the surrounding coastline. From the summit, you can see the crystal-clear waters of Makena beach below and the distant island of Molokini. Reddit The panoramic vistas extend across the West Maui mountains and towards Haleakala, making it a prime spot for photography and appreciating the island's natural beauty. Instagram
