"Great trail to hit up anytime. Just a hair over a half of a mile loop so at most your are a 1/4 for the parking lot so it is easy to avoid getting rained on.
Provides excellent examples of sinkholes along the trail and a great view of the Green River. Often a lot of wildflowers along the trail. Not much vertical change so it is an easy walk.
Named this because Mammoth Cave was the furthest that steamboats could go up the Green River (near what is now the ferry). They then had to go backwards down the Green and back into the large spring and turn around. Steamboats used to be the “Fashionable” way to come to Mammoth Cave
Note: Sandhouse Cave which is part of the Turnhole Bend spring is down below at river level and is not part of the normal / official trail. It isn't a true cave per say as it does not have any parts that do not receive sunlight. It really is a large limestone shelter. It is a beautiful entrance / spot but around 300 feet of elevation change over a very short distance. Great spot to set by the Green River, do a little fishing, or go for a dip. My son and I saw a Bald Eagle here in 2019. Keep in mind if the Green River is up you won't be able to access Sandhouse Cave as it will have water into.
