What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Camp Vits Park offers a rugged outdoor experience with challenging mountain biking and hiking trails, though many visitors note the significant presence of roots and steep sections. While appreciated for its natural setting, some reviewers lament the park's development and wish for better trail markings and safer walking conditions.
"This used to be a 73 acre wildlife area. Boy Scouts used it for decades for camporees. There was an eagle nest along the river and owls nesting in the woods. It was a beautiful quiet place until the city put a bicycle race track through the woods. There was a public hearing and a vast majority in the audience were against the bike tracks; but, alas the deal was done on the sly.
Now the wildlife in gone. The eagles left for better places. There are piles of brush that make it difficult to walk through the woods. The kids tear through the woods without a care to the damage they do.
It's sad, this used to be a really nice place. I always wonder why park departments cannot tolerate undeveloped land. What's next, frisbee golf? A massive parking lot?"

"Just tried out the mountain biking paths. Very bumpy ride - LOTS OF ROOTS! BE CAREFUL ON PATH #2. Extremely steep beginning with a 90 degree turn at the bottom. Would not recommend riding down it! But overall it's a fun trail system, just needs some rework."
Josiah Schulz
"Nice , but felt trails should be marked better. Was confused which trail we were on.
Also ALOT of roots on path trail, had to keep looking down as not to trip.
Nice place, but needs improvement for safer walking"

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider sticking to wider, more established paths if available, and be mindful that the park's natural habitat has changed, so wildlife sightings may be less frequent than in the past. The challenging terrain, particularly Trail #2's steepness, makes it unsuitable for very young children or those not accustomed to rugged paths.
🚴 Mountain Bikers
While the trails can be fun, the lack of clear markings can sometimes lead to confusion, so having a map or navigation app is a good idea. The park's development means the trail system is evolving, so conditions might change. Expect a workout and a test of your biking skills on these rugged paths.
🚶 Hikers Seeking Nature
It's worth noting that the park's ecosystem has changed, and it may not offer the abundant wildlife viewing opportunities it once did. If you enjoy a more rugged, less manicured trail experience and don't mind navigating roots, Camp Vits Park can be a good option for a hike.

Navigating the Trails
While the park is described as having many trails still in development, some reviewers find it virtually impossible to get lost. However, others mention that the trails should be marked better, leading to confusion about which path they are on. It's recommended to pay close attention to your surroundings and perhaps use a navigation app if you're concerned about staying on track. The removal of ash trees is also mentioned as an ongoing process that will affect the trail system.
For those planning a visit, wearing sturdy footwear is essential due to the uneven and root-filled terrain. Cyclists should be prepared for a demanding ride, and hikers should be mindful of their footing to avoid trips and falls. The park's rough terrain is a defining characteristic, offering a more rugged outdoor experience.
Park History and Changes
However, the introduction of a bicycle race track through the woods marked a substantial change. Despite a majority of the public audience opposing the bike tracks at a hearing, the decision was made, leading to a perceived decline in wildlife. The eagles reportedly left, and the park's natural habitat has been altered. Piles of brush now make walking more difficult, and the impact of younger visitors is noted.
This shift has led to a sentiment of sadness among some long-time visitors, who question why park departments often seem to favor developed recreational facilities over undeveloped land. Concerns about future additions like frisbee golf or massive parking lots are expressed, reflecting a desire to preserve natural spaces.
