What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Ohio State Reformatory for its rich history and the immersive experience of exploring the former prison, especially for fans of "The Shawshank Redemption." The architecture and atmosphere are often highlighted as impressive. However, some guests have noted issues with communication regarding additional fees, staff attitude, and unexpected event setups impacting their visit.
"It was such an amazing place to visit. There is so much history to learn here. We booked a tour, and lucky us we were the only two people on the tour, so our amazing tour guide customized the tour to our liking. Some areas were off limits because they were setting up for the Halloween prison, and in some areas, we were not allowed to take pictures because of that, as well as some areas still house prisoners to this day and it's a federal offense to take pictures of them. Loved all the history and picture opportunities of the Shawshank Redemption film. It is very interesting to see the cells and the chapel, the x marks the spot, and the attic. You can every sponsor a cell to be restored. Very cool place to check out. We would highly recommend you to visit here."

"We did a daytime tour to avoid the haunted house. The tour guide was excellent. They covered the actual history of the prison, along with some info about the movies that have been filmed there. There was a lot of props from Shawshank Redemption, also. Would absolutely recommend the guided tour."

"It was awesome the prison was so creepy yet historical. The makeup and graphics were great, scenes and props were very well done. They did a great job assigning times for people to book so the long lines were avoided. There were food stands and little stores to purchase merchandise. I had an elephant ear. Parking was free. I had a great time!!"
