Marfa, Texas and Blackwell School This school was designated as the Mexican school and segregated students of Mexican or Hispanic descent from the main campus of Marfa. Although it was a segregated system, that didn't stop Mexian-Ameican students making their school better and glad there was a place of public education. #Marfa #Segregation #education #publiceducation #Blackwell #class #

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Blackwell School as an important and poignant historical site, highlighting the deep impact of the stories and artifacts shared. The knowledge and kindness of the rangers and docents, particularly Ranger Chelsea and intern Tori, are frequently mentioned as enhancing the experience significantly. While the site is small, its historical weight and the community's dedication to its preservation make it a highly recommended stop for understanding Mexican American history. Reddit+2

"Highly recommend a visit to the Blackwell School if you are in Marfa on the weekend around lunch time! Ranger Chelsea was extremely kind and helped us understand all the history around the school and the Latino student experience in Marfa from 1909 to 1965. This NPS site tells a story that most people don’t know - how Mexican and Mexican American children in the US during the first half of the 20th century were de facto segregated and even faced punishment for speaking Spanish at school. The site features written accounts, photos, and artifacts from Blackwell alumni."

Ryan Misage

"Small site with a wealth of information and history. The ranger onsite went above and beyond conveying the history and importance of the Blackwell school, not only to the local area but to the greater Mexican American community."

Cindy Gardner

"A wonderful (newly designated) national historical site. Chief Ranger Chelsea was present when we visited and she was very knowledgeable. We had a great conversation about the history of the park and the future work that will be done to preserve the school. Absolutely worth a visit!"
