"Do not follow Maps' directions here. All NFS roads that cross Mud Creek are out of service after repeated years of floods, the best way from Route 89 is up Esparanza Rd.
Esperanza is a gravel road and has the highest quality surface for the rest of the ride in to CC Trailhead, except for a brief stint on Pilgrim Creek Rd. Cars should be cautious, though it is possible to travel the 10 miles in a sedan, expect it to take the better part of 45 min.
The trailhead itself sports plenty of parking and a single vault toilet, which is well-maintained and stocked. There is also a space to deposit wag bags upon your return."

"Summited on July 9th of 2025 climbing solo in one push. It took almost 18.5 hours non stop hiking and scrambling. Prior experience is Mt Baker, Mt Saint Helens, Mt Adams and dozens of smaller peaks. Met first people on trail at 8pm, 30 minutes away from the parking lot. So I didn't meet any other climbers or any signs of them for 18 hours:)
Key take aways: crampons or micro spikes are still needed since there are about dozen snow fields to cross. It's freezing cold above the Mushroom Rock at 10am and extra layers or down hoodie jacket would be helpful. Be ready to deal with whiteout/s and rock falls. Altitude sickness is real and it might significantly affect your pace, decision making and reaction. Some people may experience hallucinations. A combination of those can lead to disorientation and getting to the wrong side of the mountain.
* Arrived on the parking lot around 2am. There were couple cars and tents. No kiosk to purchase a climbing permit so you have to pay $25 in cash. Also no wildness self-issued permits were available.
* Started hiking at 2:00am.
* Reached the Mushroom Rock at 10:20am
* Stopped because of whiteout for about 15 minutes
* Reached the beginning of boulder section and stopped for another 15-20 minutes because of whiteout.
* The boulder section is challenging scramble for about an hour. It's relatively safe if you know that no one is above you. Otherwise a helmet is must. Frankly speaking I enjoyed it on the way up but I could not say the same about way down.
* Summited and made a note in the registration book at 12:50pm. Some time traveler made their note at 10:30am on July 10th. Initially I was thinking that somehow I added + 1 day while being in the whiteout but than I verified with my watch and smartphone that it was still July 9th.
* Started descending at 1pm after 10 minutes break.
* Please be careful on the boulder section above the Mushroom Rock on the way down. I fell about 2 dozen times descending and 90% of it in that area. Slow down as much as possible. Some times I incidently triggered rock falls which hit my feet.
* Got back to the parking lot at 8:30pm.
Recommended gear: first aid kit, helmet, micro spikes, compass, map, hiking poles."

"Your standard dirt road trailhead, has the whole permit, summit pass and wag bag setup so you can come straight here and be prepared to summit. One downside is that there's no water at the trailhead so come prepared for that. Beautiful views await not far up the trail!"
