Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Homochitto National Forest for its natural beauty, peaceful atmosphere, and opportunities for primitive camping and hiking. The forest offers a great escape for those looking to reconnect with nature. However, some find the primitive sites less maintained than before, and bug repellent is a must during warmer seasons.

"We camped in the primitive camping site for one night in May 2019. The site is pretty big and actually very primitive. We liked the environment a lot except the annoying flies. So bugsaway repellent is a must to have at this time of a year.

However, it may not be easy to find because the primitive site is on the sideway of the road with only a small sign on your left if you are driving towards the clear spring camping ground. It is about 1 mile from the few station. Bring some changes for the fee ($20 for developed campsite and $7 for a primitive campsite), you donโ€™t need to book a site before hand.

As regards to the Richardson trail, it is as long as 10 miles, one of the most challenging one for us. But the view and the sense of accomplishment cannot be beaten. Remember to bring enough water to keep you hydrated!!!

Update(Oct 2020):

We went the lovely clear spring campground again this week just before hurricane Delta as we really love to embrace the beauty of the nature. It is getting cool these days so the bug problems are gone.

We tried to go back to the primitive campsite but it is gone!!! I donโ€™t find any official notice on the closure but got confirmation from the camp host. Perhaps, they donโ€™t have time and money to maintain the 22 primitive campsites. What a pity! Donโ€™t get me wrong, the developed campsites are fantastic as they are also beautiful and they are closer to restrooms. But we really like the way that the primitive campsites are tucked into the forest and we can enjoy more wildness. From what I heard from the camp host, the primitive campsites are no longer maintained by them, so the fire pits are gone and the tent pads are grassy. But campers can still camp over there , now for free.

More updates on the developed campsite: they are beautiful, convenient, safe and private. The fire pit is large and you can easily fetch right-sized log from nearby. We cooked sweet potatoes this time. They are so yummy. I have to point out that the tent pad is no longer soil but hard concrete floor. So you better bring a nice sleep pad with good cushion, otherwise, you will feel the back pain as I did this time. If you are sleeping in a RV, this can be dismissed."
