Goosenecks state park in Utah is one of my favorite places to make a quick stop at because it’s so beautiful and easy to access. If you’re passing through the southeast area of Utah, this is a must! There is a $5 day use fee per vehicle, and campsites are $10 per night. The Monument Valley scenic drive is $8 per person, and well worth it. This drive exceeded my expectations! Reviews Summary

Goosenecks State Park is praised for its spectacular, easily accessible canyon views, often compared to Horseshoe Bend but with fewer crowds. Visitors appreciate the stunning sunrise and sunset opportunities and the incredible stargazing. While facilities are basic and payment is often cash-only, the breathtaking scenery makes it a highly recommended quick stop. InstagramReddit

"This location is more of a large scenic overlook than a traditional park. Despite its small size, it provides day-use areas and overnight dry camping spot. Visitors will find it easy to access, clean, and offering spectacular views."

"Well not sure if it qualifies to be a state park but the view was great. Road to get here was pretty smooth and is newly built. They do charge $5/ vehicle and the view is like 200 m from tge booth. It is a small place but worth visiting to get it off the list."

Mohit Gupta

"Absolutely stunning location. Beautiful sunset and sunrise. Honor system to pay, cash in envelope or scan QR code to pay the $10/night fee. There were a few sites still available for us to camp when we arrived an hour before sunset, in early Sept. Ground is rough rock so definitely bring your sleeper pads if you tent camp on the ground like we did. Facilities were stinky and full of angry flies. Absolutely positively do not use a white flashlight at night if you need to use the restroom here 🪰+ 👄 = 😭 Otherwise, this is my top 3 campsite, ever! 10/10 recommend."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Geology of the Goosenecks

The dramatic landscape of Goosenecks State Park is a testament to millions of years of geological activity. The San Juan River has carved its way through the Mesozoic-era sedimentary rock, creating a series of tight, winding meanders known as goosenecks. This process, called entrenchment, occurs when a river cuts downward faster than it can meander sideways, resulting in deep, narrow canyons. The exposed rock layers offer a glimpse into ancient environments, from desert sands to shallow seas. TikTok

These goosenecks are a prime example of how rivers adapt to uplifted terrain. As the Colorado Plateau rose, the San Juan River maintained its course, relentlessly eroding the rock beneath it. The result is a stunning display of natural sculpting, with the river appearing to snake through the landscape from the overlook. The sheer scale and complexity of these meanders are best appreciated from a vantage point, highlighting the immense power of water over time. Instagram

Visitors can learn about the geological history through interpretive signs, though the primary experience is visual. The park's small size belies the vast geological story it tells, making it a fascinating stop for anyone interested in the natural forces that shape our planet. The stark beauty of the eroded landscape is a powerful reminder of geological time. Reddit

Camping Under the Stars

Goosenecks State Park offers a unique dry camping experience for those seeking solitude and incredible night skies. For a modest fee of $10 per night, campers can set up at one of the available sites. These are dry camping spots, meaning there are no hookups for RVs, and you'll need to bring all your own water. InstagramReddit

The main draw for campers is the exceptional stargazing. The park is situated in an area with very low light pollution, making it one of the darkest sky locations in the United States. On a clear night, the Milky Way is often visible in stunning detail. InstagramReddit However, be aware that some visitors have noted bright lights at the entrance hut that can affect the darkest viewing conditions. Bringing a sleep mask can be helpful if these lights are bothersome. Reddit

Facilities are basic, with vault toilets available. The ground is described as rough rock, so bringing extra padding for tents is recommended. Despite the minimal amenities, the unparalleled views and the chance to sleep under a blanket of stars make camping at Goosenecks a memorable experience for many. Reddit

A Photographer's Dream

Goosenecks State Park is a haven for photographers, offering dramatic landscapes that are particularly stunning during the golden hours. The San Juan River's intricate meanders provide a unique and captivating subject, especially when bathed in the warm light of sunrise or sunset. InstagramReddit A wide-angle lens is highly recommended to capture the full scope of the canyon's grandeur. Instagram

For those interested in astrophotography, the park's designation as a dark sky location makes it an ideal spot to capture the Milky Way and countless stars. InstagramReddit While the main overlook offers the most accessible views, consider using a drone (where permitted) to gain a different perspective on the goosenecks. Instagram Remember to bring a tripod for stable shots during low-light conditions and to experiment with different compositions to highlight the vastness of the desert. Instagram

While the park itself is small, the photographic opportunities are immense. The interplay of light and shadow across the ancient rock formations creates a dynamic scene that changes throughout the day. Capturing the sheer scale of the river's carving over millennia is a rewarding challenge for any photographer. Instagram
