Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the enchanting and well-maintained South Mountain Fairy Trail, calling it a magical experience perfect for children and the young at heart. While parking can be a challenge on busy days, the easy, flat trail and the sheer number of imaginative fairy houses make it a highly recommended destination for a whimsical nature walk.

"This is a wonderful and well maintained fairy trail. There are easily a hundred fairies living here, if not more. I don't think you could spot them all even if you spent a whole afternoon here.

The trail is short and flat through most of the way and there are ropes guiding you along the way. At one point, the trail splits into a short path back to the parking lot and a longer path that connects to other trails. Not difficult to walk, excellent hike for kids and teenagers.

Parking lot was very busy on a Saturday afternoon, there were cars idling and waiting for spots. You are likely to have better luck at the train station parking lot, which is across the street and free on weekends."

"The Fairy Trail at South Mountain Reservation is a charming, family-friendly walk that feels straight out of a storybook. It’s a short, easy trail tucked in the woods, lined with dozens of tiny fairy houses crafted from natural materials. Kids love hunting for each one, and adults can’t help but smile at the creativity. A peaceful, magical experience that gently encourages little ones to connect with nature."

"We started at this location and walked over to the Lenape trail (yellow on the map). The parking was full, however there is an overflow lot at the library across the street, which is free on the weekends. We planned to hike past Hobble Falls and then take the Rahway trail to return to the parking. However, it took us a long time just to reach the Balls Bluff intersection, so we decided to take the Balls Bluff trail, and eventually merge into the Rahway trail (white trail) earlier. Starting section of the lenape trail has an extreme elevation hike, which is a great warm-up, but after that it was pretty minor ups & downs to the end. Lenape trail is well maintained nicely marked with trail signs and very scenic. On the way, there is Washington Rock, a historic spot, followed by a viewing platform. After we merged onto the Rahway trail, we hiked next to the stream, which was beautiful. We made it back to the parking lot, with a few more detours via brown trail, in about 4 hours total, and about 15000 steps on the watch, which is roughly 6+ miles. Would love to come again, and do the full loop next time!! We didn't do the fairy trail, although it's good for little kids. The Rahway trail also has a mini dam, that controls water flow."
