Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Milwaukee Art Museum for its stunning architecture, particularly the iconic moving 'wings,' and its impressive collection of American modern art. The beautiful lakefront location and well-curated exhibits contribute to a highly enjoyable experience, though some find the wings' schedule unpredictable and cafe prices a bit high.

"One of the best museums in the country both inside and out and incredible views right on gorgeous Lake Michigan. Plan to have lunch at the awesome cafe overlooking the lake, which includes a patio. Collection is beautifully arranged with an incredible American modern collection, best in Midwest. I got a membership so I can walk over and do laps around the tunnels which overlook the lake and city! Cafe is excellent with perfect espresso, salads, wraps and subs, soups and wine, etc. Supporting the cafe supports the museum! Well done!"

"Wonderful museum with a fantastic collection and rotating special exhibits. Absolutely stunning building. Big enough to cover lots of artistic territory, but spacious and curated amazingly well so that you don't feel overwhelmed. Cafe on site. We spent about 4 hours there and saw about 75% of the exhibits. Strongly recommend."

David Segleau

"This museum is a dream come true. We traveled from Michigan for Summerfest and knew we had to go to this museum while we were in town!

Our first impressions were just marveling at how beautiful it was. Even the underground parking is beautiful! For some reason the wings didn’t open at noon and flap, and we didn’t get to see them open at all this weekend which was such a bummer!

The museum is fairly priced at $27, and this place is huge. We kept thinking we went through every room and just kept finding more art! We spent almost 3 hours here.

The cafe is really nice for a quick bite and beautiful view. Just keep in mind they are cafe prices.

I liked the gift shop but I wasn’t blown away.

Overall you will see some great things at this museum and you’ll be happy you went!"

The Architectural Marvel: Santiago Calatrava's Vision

The Milwaukee Art Museum is as famous for its architecture as it is for its art, largely thanks to the visionary Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. His design for the Quadracci Pavilion, completed in 2001, is a breathtaking fusion of art and engineering. The pavilion's most iconic feature is the Burke Brise Soleil, a massive, movable sunscreen that opens and closes like the wings of a bird, spanning 217 feet. This spectacular kinetic element is inspired by nature, mimicking the movement of flowers and animals.Instagram The building also features soaring vaulted ceilings, dramatic staircases, and expansive glass walls that offer stunning views of Lake Michigan, making the museum experience a feast for the eyes both inside and out.

Calatrava's design aimed to create a building that was not just a container for art but a work of art in itself. The Burke Brise Soleil is not just for aesthetics; it also helps regulate sunlight and temperature within the pavilion. Visitors often marvel at how the structure seems to float above the water, a testament to Calatrava's ability to blend form and function. The museum's expansion, including the Quadracci Pavilion, significantly boosted its profile and visitor numbers, solidifying its status as a landmark destination in Milwaukee.Instagram

Beyond the Quadracci Pavilion, the museum complex includes older structures that have been integrated into the overall design. The War Memorial Center, designed by Eero Saarinen, and the 1957 addition by David Kahler are all part of the museum's architectural narrative. This layering of architectural styles, culminating in Calatrava's modern masterpiece, creates a dynamic and engaging environment for exploring art and appreciating design. The museum's commitment to showcasing art within such a remarkable architectural setting is a key part of its appeal.Instagram

Exploring the Collections: From American Modern to Global Art

The Milwaukee Art Museum boasts a diverse and impressive collection spanning various periods and cultures. It is particularly celebrated for its American Modern collection, considered one of the finest in the Midwest. This collection features significant works by artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe, Marsden Hartley, and Charles Sheeler, offering a deep dive into the evolution of American art in the 20th century. Visitors often express surprise at the breadth and quality of these pieces.Reddit

Beyond American art, the museum houses extensive collections of European art, including Old Masters and Impressionist works. There are also notable holdings in decorative arts, photography, and prints and drawings. The museum actively engages with contemporary art, regularly featuring thought-provoking special exhibitions that bring new perspectives and global artists to Milwaukee. These rotating exhibits ensure there's always something fresh to discover on each visit.TikTok

For those interested in unique experiences, the museum has also hosted immersive installations. For example, 'Meadow,' an upside-down landscape of kinetic flowers, offered a truly unique artistic encounter.Instagram Another exhibit, 'Deep Lake Future,' merged technology with science to tell a story about the Great Lakes ecosystem.TikTok These innovative exhibitions highlight the museum's commitment to pushing artistic boundaries and offering visitors engaging, multi-sensory art experiences.

A Day Trip from Chicago: Train Travel and Beyond

For many, the Milwaukee Art Museum serves as the perfect destination for a day trip from Chicago. The Amtrak Hiawatha Service is a popular and convenient option, offering a comfortable and scenic journey that takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. With tickets often costing less than $40 round trip, it's an economical choice for a quick getaway.TikTok Arriving at Milwaukee's Intermodal Station, visitors can then take a short taxi, rideshare, or bus to reach the museum, or enjoy a pleasant walk along the lakefront if the weather permits.

Beyond the museum itself, a day trip to Milwaukee can be enhanced by exploring nearby attractions. The Discovery World science and technology museum is located just a short distance away, offering interactive exhibits for all ages.TikTok For lunch or dinner recommendations, the area around the museum and downtown Milwaukee offers a variety of dining options, from casual cafes to more upscale restaurants.Reddit Many visitors combine their museum visit with exploring the city's vibrant lakefront and downtown areas.
