I spent part of this amazing Sunday afternoon driving through DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge. Located along the Missouri River in both Nebraska and Iowa, it’s a 30 minute drive from downtown Omaha. With over 8,300 acres (including the seven-mile long DeSoto Lake - an oxbow that used to be part of the river), the bottomland forests, tall grass prairie, and wetland habitats that make up the refu...

Bertrand Steamboat sank near Omaha - did you know about the museum that tells the story? 🚢 Bertrand Museum is located inside the visitor center at DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge in Missouri Valley, Iowa. It’s one of those random, cool museums you never knew was so close to Omaha. ➡️ You can also follow a short trail nearby to see the lake where they found the steamboat (the boat remains underwate...

"Great informative stop, nice gift shop, and fantastic information and artifacts about a steamship that sank back in the day... The thousands of artifacts available for viewing are numourous and perfectly preserved.

Beautiful National Nature area and would love to come back when the massive flocks of snow geese and other migratory birds arrive!! Many seated viewing areas and several binoculars available.

"This was was kind of a hidden gem. Not many people. Some fun interactive items that my kids enjoyed thoroughly like pelts and bones, a giant eagle nest, and different exhibits of taxidermy. So many birds were flying around.

The visitor center itself was super cool and unique with alot of glass views of the lake. There was a nice little trail that was small but serene. The drive through scenic trail was interesting with a few stops along the way. Definately a place to check out when their migratory birds are there. Check their Facebook page for numbers and times when they're there but the facility seems to be set up for migratory viewings and possible ranger talks. Highly recommend checking it out. Wish we had more time to check out a little more.

Also the steamboat exhibit inside is super neat and amazing how many items they found from the wreckage."

"I stopped here on a work trip while driving from Omaha to Sioux City. I was really impressed and happy I stopped. I saw two bald eagles and countless other birds. There were cool dioramas and more than I expected from the steamboat exhibit. They had a small gift shop with some decent merch. I really enjoyed driving around, hiking, running, and generally connecting with nature. It was very peaceful and uncrowded."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Steamboat Bertrand: A Sunken Treasure

The Steamboat Bertrand was a vital part of 19th-century river commerce, carrying goods along the Missouri River. In 1865, it met its end when it struck a snag and sank near Omaha, Nebraska. For over a century, its remains lay hidden beneath the riverbed, preserving its cargo and the stories of its passengers.

The discovery and subsequent excavation of the Bertrand in the 1960s yielded an astonishing collection of artifacts. These items, remarkably preserved by the anaerobic conditions of the river mud, offer an unparalleled glimpse into the daily lives, trade, and culture of the American West during that era. The Steamboat Bertrand Museum, housed within the DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge visitor center, proudly displays thousands of these recovered treasures, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts. TikTokReddit

Visitors can marvel at everything from personal effects and clothing to tools, machinery parts, and even preserved food items. The sheer volume and condition of the artifacts provide a tangible connection to the past, illustrating the challenges and opportunities of life on the frontier. It's a truly unique museum experience that complements the natural beauty of the refuge. Reddit

Birdwatching Paradise: Migratory Wonders

DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge is a critical stopover point for countless migratory birds, making it a premier destination for birdwatching. The refuge's diverse habitats, including wetlands, forests, and grasslands, provide essential food and resting grounds for species traveling along the Central Flyway. The most dramatic spectacle occurs during the fall and spring migrations, when the skies can be filled with thousands of snow geese, Canada geese, and various species of ducks and wading birds. TikTokReddit

Beyond the large migratory flocks, the refuge is also home to a variety of resident bird species and offers excellent opportunities to spot bald eagles, especially during the winter months. The visitor center often provides updates on bird numbers and locations, helping visitors maximize their viewing experience. Binoculars and spotting scopes are highly recommended, and many viewing areas are equipped with these amenities. Reddit

For the best experience, plan your visit during the peak migration periods. Checking the refuge's Facebook page or contacting the visitor center for the latest sightings can significantly enhance your birdwatching adventure. The sheer scale of the avian congregations is a breathtaking natural phenomenon that draws nature lovers and photographers from far and wide. InstagramReddit

DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge offers a network of trails and a scenic drive designed to immerse visitors in its natural beauty. The DeSoto Lake trail provides a serene walk with lovely views of the oxbow lake, which was once a part of the mighty Missouri River.
