Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the Shafer Trail's breathtaking views and thrilling 4x4 adventure, calling it a highlight of any Moab trip. While some find the trail itself less challenging than expected, the dramatic scenery and the experience of navigating the switchbacks are universally praised. The need for a high-clearance 4x4 is a recurring point, with some noting the rougher conditions on the Potash Road section.

"This admission fee-based viewpoint is one of many jaw-dropping views you will experience in this area. The overlook can be accessed by using the small pull-off on the east side of Grand View Point Road. This parking area is very small and near a bend in the road, so be careful pulling out into traffic. This stunning viewpoint offers a panoramic perspective of the rugged Shafer Canyon and a great view of the Shafer Basin Road. However, you will not be able to see the Colorado River from this viewpoint, or the Shafer Canyon Overlook Trailhead, but it still is a stunning view. There are no Park facilities at this location."

Thomas B

"The upper section of trail is fun...until a guy driving a dually tries to drive up the opposite direction. The lower section, outside the national park boundaries is very rough, especially around the potash ponds. Still a fun time and must do experience for those with high clearance vehicles."

Jason Lever

"Shafer Trail Viewpoint stuns with sweeping views of winding switchbacks carved into dramatic red rock cliffs. The drop-offs are breathtaking, the scenery vast, and it perfectly captures the wild, rugged spirit of Canyonlands."
