Reviews Summary
Visitors are captivated by the Cooley House's unique Prairie School architecture and its historical significance as a William Burley Griffin design. Its status as a rare example of this style in Louisiana is a major draw. Some visitors note that it's a fascinating structure, though information on its current accessibility or tour availability would enhance planning.
"Significance: Construction of the G.B. Cooley residence commenced in 1926. The architect, William Burley Griffin, was an associate of Frank Lloyd Wright (1902-1906). Griffin initially designed the house in 1910, at which time the plans were exhibited at the Chicago Architectural Club. In 1912 Griffin won a competition to plan Canberra, the capital city of Australia, to which he soon removed. The Cooley House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 at a state level of significance; it is believed to be the only Prairie style house in Louisiana and Griffin's only such house in the south. Plans included landscaping, exterior garden walls, a pool and fountain, detached garage. Features include architect designed lamps, doors and windows. Walls are concrete, flooring cork. Other advanced features were a central vacuum system, central heating with steam and a tiled sauna/steam room. One hundred casement windows and an attic fan provided ventilation."
