What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors appreciate the scenic beauty of the James River, especially the views from the pedestrian bridge and the historical significance of the canal locks. It's a peaceful spot for a picnic and a short hike, even when the visitor center itself is closed. However, seasonal closures can be a disappointment for those expecting the center to be open.
"We visited on a Friday in early November 2024 but the visitor center close early for the season. Website said they were supposed to be open through our following weekend. Best to call first if you want to confirm. We wanted to get our NPS Passport Stamp and work on Blue Ridge Parkway Junior Ranger but probably have to do next time.
Even though the visitor center was closed, the bathrooms were open and the trails were as well. Can't missing taking the short walk across the bridge. It was so beautiful with the fall colors and overcast skies when we visited. The water was so calm it was like a perfect reflection as well.
We actually had a flat tire and spent majority of the time emptying the van to replace with the spare to get a new tire. So we didn't get a chance to do the trail of the trees but I've heard good things and it's supposed to be short.
We would like to visit again and checkout the visitor center inside. There are also a number of picnic tables over looking the river to have a nice day out here as well."

"Great little VC - I’ve travelled the parkway for years but have never stopped here! Small museum about the James River Canal. Information and restrooms are also available. A short (0.6 mi) trail along the cliffs is nearby, as well as a footbridge across the river to a lock on the aforementioned canal. There is also a small picnic area here alongside the river."
