Today is the 67th anniversary of the start of the Montgomery Bus Boycott.⁣ ⁣ On this day in 1955, Dr. King spoke to close to 5,000 folks at the Holt Street Baptist Church and said, “I won’t rest; I will face intimidation and everything else.”⁣ ⁣ Speaking of the intimidation he knew he and the community would face, the sacrifice of individual comfort, and the requirement to put livelihoods on the l...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Holt Street Baptist Church as an iconic and essential site for understanding the Civil Rights Movement. Many are moved by standing in the sanctuary where Dr. King delivered his historic speech and find the museum's exhibits deeply informative. Some note the surrounding community's displacement due to past urban planning, which adds a layer of historical context to the site's preservation.

"I experienced the historic church museum. Iconic part of the modern Civil Rights Movement. I saw this place in documentaries and books and stood in the same spot as Rosa Parks, Fred Gray, MLK, ED Nixon, etc. A freeway right in front destroyed and displaced the community. Many parishioners do not live in the area. But history was made here."

"This is one of the major ground zeros for the Civil Rights movement and it is where a 26 year old Reverend MLK Jr. gave his ground breaking speech that began the Montogomery Bus Boycott. This is a must visit!! Anyone that wants to learn about the history of the Civil Rights movement has to visit this church because not only will you learn about the past you will learn something about the present. After the boycott the City of Montgomery and the Alabama State Highway Department destroyed the neighborhoods where the church is located, put in an interstate and did not add a single exit or entrance ramp to the historical site or the neighborhoods. The church sat empty for 2 decades and was almost torn down. A good student will learn and understand a lot about the depths of racism in America."

"June 19 continues with the AARP #5356 Richmond North Chapter's Alabama Civil Rights and New Orleans Tour at the church, which served as a meeting place during the Montgomery bus boycott."
