Reviews Summary

Mount Bross offers stunning summit views and is a key part of the challenging DeCaliBron loop. Hikers praise the rewarding vistas, but many caution about the difficult, loose scree on the descent, emphasizing the need for sturdy footwear and careful navigation. The drive to the trailhead can also be demanding.

"Beautiful fourteener along the DeCaliBron Trail from Kite Lake Trailhead. Easy to get to from Mt. Cameron. Tough to get to from Kite Lake, and even tougher to get from the top back down to Kite Lake along the trail - loose dirt and scree, plus very steep slopes nearly all the way down! The views from the top though, especially of South Park, are amazing!"

"Hiked Bross on 9/23. The wind wasn’t too bad, but it did start to snow on me. Started at 2:30 p.m. after working a day and got back to the car just before sunset at 7. Best way to do four 14ers.

I highly recommend doing the hike clockwise. You go up the stepper path to Democrat and then down the shale path after Bross."

Mark Mugleston

"Pretty easy trail if you can drive well. Any awd could make it with the right driving."

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

Hiking Mount Bross with children is a significant undertaking and generally recommended only for older, experienced young hikers. The steep ascents and descents, coupled with loose scree, pose a considerable risk for younger children. If attempting, ensure children are well-equipped with proper footwear and are closely supervised at all times. Reddit

Consider focusing on shorter hikes in the area or choosing a less challenging 14er if you're introducing children to high-altitude hiking. The Kite Lake Trailhead itself offers some beautiful scenery, and a shorter out-and-back to a less demanding point might be more suitable for a family outing.

💰 Budget Travelers

Mount Bross is an excellent destination for budget travelers as there are typically no entrance fees or permits required for day hiking. The main costs will be transportation to the Kite Lake Trailhead and any gear you might need. Reddit

Packing your own food and water is essential, as amenities are scarce. If you don't own a high-clearance vehicle, consider carpooling with other hikers to share the cost of fuel and potential wear and tear on a less-than-ideal road. This also makes the trip more social!

Navigating the DeCaliBron Loop

The DeCaliBron loop is a classic Colorado 14er challenge, linking Mounts Democrat, Cameron, Lincoln, and Bross. Many hikers opt for a clockwise direction, tackling the steeper ascent to Mount Democrat first. This approach often leads to a descent from Mount Bross that involves navigating loose dirt and scree, which can be quite challenging and requires careful foot placement. Reddit

This loop is a significant undertaking, typically requiring 6-10 hours to complete. It's crucial to start early, especially during the summer months, to avoid afternoon thunderstorms that are common at high altitudes. The Kite Lake Trailhead is the primary access point, but the road leading to it can be rough, making AWD or a high-clearance vehicle advisable. Reddit

While the summit of Mount Bross itself might be described as 'boring' by some, the rewarding panoramic views of South Park and the surrounding peaks make the effort worthwhile. The varied terrain, from rocky paths to steep scree fields, offers a true high-altitude hiking experience.

The Challenge of the Descent

The descent from Mount Bross, particularly the section leading back towards Kite Lake, is frequently cited as the most difficult part of the hike. Travelers describe it as steep, loose, and unforgiving, with little to grab onto. This terrain demands significant concentration and a good sense of balance. Reddit

Hikers recommend wearing sturdy hiking boots with excellent ankle support to help navigate the scree and loose dirt. Trekking poles can also be invaluable for stability and reducing strain on your knees during the descent. Taking your time and being deliberate with each step is key to safely descending this section. Reddit

While challenging, the unique geological features of the descent also offer a different kind of visual interest. The stark, rocky slopes contrast with the alpine meadows, creating a dramatic landscape that many find memorable, even if it's a tough trek down.
