What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the awe-inspiring views and the thrilling experience of reaching the summit, whether by car or the historic Cog Railway. The unpredictable weather is a significant factor, with clear days being a highlight, while windy and cloudy conditions are also part of the mountain's unique charm. Some find the Auto Road drive challenging but rewarding, while others recommend the Cog Railway for a more relaxed ascent.
"Amazing drive, remember no guardrails and steep dropoffs. But the view!!! Did the Auto tour this time and we drive up ourselves. Road is wide enough for 2 cars and many places to pull off and cool your brakes on the way down. Views are awe inspiring. Been here 3 times and this was the clearest and most mild temperatured day ever."

"One of the most thrilling drives we’ve ever experienced! We arrived around 8:10 to line up before the 9 AM opening. With storms in the forecast, we wanted to make sure we got up before the weather turned and also beat the crowds. We ended up fourth in line, but as we climbed, the other cars pulled over, and we reached the top first. It was wonderful not having to weave around traffic heading down as we went up. The descent wasn’t quite as exciting, but definitely make sure to use low gear and take it slow to avoid overheating your brakes.
The view at the summit will truly leave you speechless. Watching the cog train make its way up was also a fun bonus. The visitor center is well done and has everything you might need. The restrooms were clean, and the gift shop and kitchen offered all the basics for a quick stop. Oh, and if you need to mail anything there is even a US Post Office up top. 🙌"

"A cold windy cloudy must do experience! Hang on to your hat. One of a kind cog train. Catch a bite to eat. Many changes in weather within 1 or 2 hours. Visibility very variable."

🎫 🧭 Onsite Experience
At the summit, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views, visit the Mount Washington State Park Visitor Center, explore the historic site, and even mail a postcard from the US Post Office.

The summit experience can be enjoyed by families, especially via the Auto Road or Cog Railway. However, the extreme weather and steep drop-offs require constant supervision of children. Hiking trails are generally not recommended for young children.
Dress in layers! Include a waterproof and windproof outer shell, warm mid-layers (fleece or down), and a hat and gloves. Even on a warm day below, it can be freezing and windy at the summit.
📸 📸 Photography
The summit offers incredible panoramic views, especially during sunrise and sunset if conditions are clear. The winding Auto Road itself provides dramatic shots, and the Cog Railway against the mountain backdrop is iconic.
Early morning or late afternoon often provide the best light for photography. However, clear conditions are paramount, so be prepared to shoot whenever the weather cooperates.
A wide-angle lens is great for capturing the expansive landscapes. A telephoto lens can be useful for isolating details or capturing the Cog Railway. A sturdy tripod is helpful for low-light conditions, but be mindful of the wind. Protect your gear from the elements.
Use a slightly slower shutter speed to show motion blur in clouds or vegetation. Capturing people holding onto their hats or hair blowing dramatically can also convey the wind's power.
Generally, photography is allowed throughout the park and on the Auto Road. However, always be respectful of other visitors and private property. Drone usage may be restricted, so check park regulations.
For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
The visitor center at the summit provides educational exhibits about the mountain's weather and history, which can be engaging for kids. While the hiking trails are generally not suitable for very young children due to the challenging terrain and extreme weather, older, experienced children might enjoy shorter, well-marked trails if conditions are favorable. The novelty of the Cog Railway or the thrill of the Auto Road drive are often highlights for families.
🚗 Road Trippers & Day-Trippers
Be prepared for the drive's intensity; it's not for the faint of heart due to the lack of guardrails and steep inclines. Factor in at least 2-3 hours for the round trip, including time at the summit. If driving isn't your preference, consider the Cog Railway as an alternative day trip, though booking tickets in advance is crucial. The summit offers amenities like restrooms and a cafe, making it a convenient stop.
🥾 Experienced Hikers
It's crucial to check the weather forecast specifically for the summit and be aware of conditions on your chosen trail. Trails can be steep, rocky, and exposed. Experienced hikers often recommend starting early, informing someone of your hiking plans, and being willing to turn back if conditions deteriorate. The sense of accomplishment upon reaching the summit via foot is immense, but safety must always be the top priority.

The Infamous Weather of Mount Washington
Visitors must be prepared for drastic weather shifts within a short period. A sunny, calm day at the base can quickly turn into a freezing, gale-force windstorm at the summit. This is why layering clothing is the single most important piece of advice for anyone visiting. Even in summer, a warm hat, gloves, and a waterproof, windproof jacket are essential. Ignoring the weather warnings can lead to hypothermia and other serious risks.
The summit weather also impacts accessibility. The Mount Washington Auto Road and the Cog Railway can close with little notice due to severe weather. Always check the official park and road condition websites before your visit. The visitor center offers exhibits on the mountain's weather history and current conditions, providing valuable context for the extreme environment.
Navigating the Mount Washington Auto Road
Drivers are advised to use a low gear for the entire ascent and descent to prevent brake overheating. There are designated pull-offs where drivers can cool their brakes and enjoy the scenery. It's crucial to be comfortable with heights and confident in your vehicle's braking capabilities. Many visitors opt for the guided tours offered by the park, which provide a safer and more informative experience, allowing passengers to fully appreciate the views without the stress of driving.
Upon reaching the summit, the visitor center offers a welcome respite. Remember that the descent is just as critical as the ascent. Take your time, use your brakes judiciously, and be aware of oncoming traffic, especially during peak hours. The drive is an adventure in itself, offering a unique perspective on the mountain's rugged beauty.
The Historic Cog Railway Experience
Passengers can choose between the steam locomotives or the diesel locomotives, each offering a different, yet equally charming, experience. The steam engines provide a nostalgic journey with the sights and sounds of a bygone era, while the diesel engines offer a more modern and efficient ride. Regardless of your choice, the climb is an adventure, with the train tilting and groaning as it conquers the mountain's gradient.
It's highly recommended to book your Cog Railway tickets well in advance, especially during the peak summer season and fall foliage. Tickets can sell out quickly, and missing out on this iconic experience would be a shame. The railway operates from late spring through fall, and its schedule is always subject to weather conditions, so always check their official website for the most up-to-date information.
