Mount Whitney Hiking Advice (Mount Whitney, California, USA)
After applying for a few years now, I finally won a multi-day permit this year to hike Mt Whitney in August 2024. For all you who have done the Mt Whitney hike before, just looking for a little bit of advice on our tentative schedule for prep / altitude acclimation. A little…

Can you summit Mt. Whitney and get into Lone Pine all in one day?
I'm looking to summit Whitney and get into Lone Pine on a Thursday (stay at hotel for the night) in time to catch the ESTA bus that leaves for Reno the next Friday morning at 6:15am. Think this is doable? This is my first time hiking JMT.
Last year, I did the hike up to the summit of Mt. Whitney in CA as a day hike. This 24 mile, 6,200 elevation gain permit only hike leads to the tallest mountain in the contiguous US. I had done no training barring weekly hikes in LA and it took me 20 hours to complete it. Toughest thing I have done.
The hike starts at Whitney Portal and then climbs up past Lone Pine Lake, Outpost Camp (gorgeous campground), Consultation Lake, arriving at Trail Camp after climbing around 3,600 feet. From there you start to climb up the infamous '99 switchbacks' all the way up to 'Trail…

Ride from Whitney Portal to Lone Pine / Stay in Lone Pine
Title states it, but for someone exiting the JMT through Whitney Portal, what are the options in terms of getting to Lone Pine? It'll be my 1st time in that area. From what I've read, many hitch it, but can I rely on this without a backup plan? Any of you find any difficulty…

What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Mount Whitney Trail offers an unparalleled experience, with many hikers finding the summit views absolutely breathtaking and the climb rewarding despite its difficulty. The well-maintained trail and the sense of accomplishment are major highlights. However, the strenuous nature of the hike, the competitive permit process, and the potential for altitude sickness are common challenges.
"The highest point in the Continental US, and it lives up to its name. Climbed as a day hike in July 2021 via the Mount Whitney Trail. 11 miles up that are not particularly difficult and are only extremely steep in a few places, but the distance is enough to tire you out (and the 99 switchbacks get old very quickly). Well worth the reward at the summit. Came on a day when not a cloud was in the sky, and had amazing views in all directions. A nice hut at the summit helps you get out of the sun. Only complaint was my 4 AM alpine start did not give me the hint to put sunscreen on, and I ended up taking my "redneck" label to a whole new level that day. Finished in 13:20 round trip (being somewhat out of shape at the time) and enjoyed a huge burger at the portal store when I returned. Highly recommended (just bring sunscreen AND make sure you plan ahead and select a few possible days when entering the permit lottery)."
