What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Alligator Alley offers a unique drive through the Everglades, with opportunities to spot wildlife. However, travelers frequently cite significant traffic delays at the single toll booth and issues with payment methods, leading to frustration. The lack of rest stops is also a concern for some.
"When entering Alligator Alley from either direction, one cannot help but think about how you are literally crossing over a river of grass, complete with all the accompanying nature. Most of the route is fenced, so don’t expect to cross paths with any alligators, but believe me, they are watching..."
Harrison C. Davies
"Why is there only one SunPass booth?? Build two, build three! The traffic jam to get through the one booth went on for miles and miles!"
David Ouziel
"I wish I could give a minus 5 star review. This is the third or fourth time I have to go through this plaza. This is the most nonsense and upsetting toll plaza I’ve ever seen in the entire country. First of all, you can only pay cash, which is extremely inconvenient, not to mention that most toll plaza will bill you with your plate. Second the personnel is beyond rude, sarcastic, pushy, and to make matters worse, having a full phone conversation (personal) while speaking with you. When you ask how can pay aside from paying cash, they keep repeating “cash baby” “this is only cash” we are living in an era where we can pay with our phones or cards anywhere we need, and these people are still asking for cash. Even worse, the woman did not even tell us how much the toll was, she took my 20$ and gave me 12$ and some cents back. I’m not even sure if she stole money from me! This is the most upsetting and ridiculous experience ever. Make sure if you have to take this road that you either have a transponder or you carry cash. And ask how much is the toll and check your receipt (I never got one)."

Tailored advice for your travel style

Tips for families: Pack plenty of snacks and drinks, as rest stops are scarce. Consider making a game out of spotting wildlife. If possible, plan your travel to avoid peak traffic times around the toll. Ensure you have cash for the toll to avoid payment hassles.
🚗 Solo Travelers & Road Trippers
Tips for solo travelers: Ensure your vehicle is in good condition before you start. Download offline maps in case of spotty cell service. Carry cash for the toll and be prepared for potential delays. The Alligator Alley Experience
Travelers often remark on the sheer scale of the Everglades visible from the highway. It's a critical corridor connecting Southwest Florida (like Naples) with Southeast Florida (like Fort Lauderdale). The journey can be both practical for travel and a scenic adventure, especially for those interested in Florida's natural beauty.
However, the experience isn't without its challenges. The single toll booth has been a point of contention for many, leading to significant traffic backups. Additionally, some visitors have expressed concerns about the lack of readily available rest stops or places to pull over for a break, which can be a worry for those prone to anxiety or needing frequent stops.
Wildlife Spotting on Alligator Alley
Beyond alligators, the Everglades ecosystem supports a rich diversity of birds, including egrets, herons, and various waterfowl. Keep your eyes peeled for turtles sunning themselves on logs or banks. The best times for wildlife viewing are typically early mornings and late afternoons when animals are most active and the light is softer for photography.
Remember that these are wild animals. It's essential to maintain a safe distance and never attempt to feed them. The boardwalks offer a safer vantage point for observation and photography. Enjoy the spectacle of nature from a respectful distance.
Navigating the Toll and Traffic
Payment at the toll plaza has also been a source of frustration for some travelers. While a SunPass transponder is the most convenient option, several reviews strongly advise carrying cash. There are reports of issues with other payment methods and an insistence on cash-only transactions by some personnel, leading to inconvenience and potential confusion.
To mitigate these issues, consider traveling during off-peak hours if possible. If you must travel during busy times, factor in extra travel time for potential delays at the toll. Always ensure you have a mix of payment options, with cash being a priority based on traveler feedback.
