What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Hickory Canyons Natural Area is praised as a hidden gem with beautiful natural scenery and a rewarding hiking experience, particularly the 1-mile trail. Visitors appreciate the clear paths and picturesque views, though some note the waterfall's intermittent presence and the trail's moderate difficulty. The lack of amenities like restrooms is a common point of consideration.
"What a great area to explore. It has a clear rocky path with most of the trail, then a clear walking trail to all the picture areas and nature scenery. Google maps take you straight there. There are two trails and they are marked with 1/2 mile on one side and 1 mile across the road. The 1 mile is the one with the waterfall. When you are at the fork of the 1 mile trail go right for the top of the waterfall and the left of the fork is for the bottom. Happy exploring!"

"We found this place online by searching for hiking trails close to us. We live in IL metro east. I've never heard of this one but took a chance, and it was worth it. It is a hidden gem both figuratively and literally. There is no signage until at the actual site. It is just a small parking area at the trial heads. Also, there were no restrooms, which I had read when searching for it, so we stopped before just to be ready.😃. The hike itself was fairly easy, and I'm a beginner, 50 plus years old. The scenery was just beautiful. It's definitely a place we'd return to. We visited on a Saturday morning, arriving about 9, and we had the trail to ourselves most of the time. Even when we left, there was just a small handful of other cars. It was a very peaceful and quiet time."

"You park along the road essentially as there wasn't really a parking lot. One side of the road was 1/2 mile and the other was 1 mile. The 1 mile route was very well marked and that's important too because there were lots of leaves on the ground so losing the path would have been easy. Moderate difficulty and no restrooms"
