Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate The Dairy for its charming Victorian architecture, its role as a helpful visitor center with free maps, and its unique, park-supporting gift shop. While some find the name misleading, the historical context and the quality of souvenirs are often highlighted as positives. The staff are generally described as welcoming and attentive.

"Reasonably priced bottled water that supports park conservation and some climate controlled seating- what more could you want? They also have information about the park’s history and offer walking tours, and there is a small selection of souvenirs available.

The name is somewhat confusing, because many people come in (not unreasonably) expecting ice cream or an exhibit about a dairy. However, the building got its name from being the place New Yorkers could go to get milk directly from dairy farmers that did not contain all of the horrifying things you read about in school that led to the pure food and drug act of 1906. You’ll only learn that by asking the staff, though - it seems like a small sign about the building’s name and origins would be helpful."

"Super cool architecture! From the internet "Designed by Calvert Vaux to resemble a Victorian country cottage and completed in 1871, the Dairy is located at the heart of the Children’s District—the area of the Park created specifically for its youngest visitors.

Originally, the Dairy was an eatery where children could get fresh milk, which wasn’t readily available to many urban families. Refreshments were served under the Dairy’s porch, where visitors could enjoy cool breezes from the nearby Pond. The large rolling lawn in front of the building provided a place for children to play.""

"Very limited gift options, however what they have are nice book, toys, t-shirts, sweaters, totes , postcard and the staff are very welcoming 🙏"
