What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the National Museum of the American Sailor to be a free and informative stop, particularly for those with a connection to naval training. While some expected a larger collection, the exhibits on boot camp and ship life are appreciated, and the unique tattoo display is a memorable feature. It's often seen as a worthwhile visit if you're already in the area or attending a graduation.
"It was really just okay. I have been to many military base museums. They are great as they are free and many times have things that children would really enjoy. For being the only basic training naval base I would have expected more. The foundation of the displays were explanatory posters with a few photos. There were some uniforms, a rack layout and a few other items, but not a lot.
The strangest part of the museum experience is that about 1/3 of the space is dedicated to a display on tattoos. The museum may be worth stopping in at if you are in the area but I would not make a special trip."

"I was looking for a nice museum of Navy heritage or something but it was just a small building with a few pieces of information about boot camp and half of the building dedicated to various old tattoos that sailors have gotten. Honestly a different type of museum than what I was expecting. To me it wasn't that great but to each their own."

"I really enjoyed the opportunity to learn so much. The wide range of subjects and information provided wonderful entertainment while we waited for our new Sailor. If you like history this is the place for you. A piece of old ironsides mad3 my day and the whole visit worthwhile."
