What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the Golden Spike Tower, especially train enthusiasts who are mesmerized by the sheer scale of Bailey Yard and its operations. The historical exhibits and the unique 'hump' yard are frequently highlighted as fascinating. The pet-friendly policy and complimentary coffee are also appreciated amenities.
"Great visit, and a great location for any train enthusiasts. Perfect view of a large yard, and maintenance shop with full view of everything.
The "hump" launching cars to be sorted automatically is a major feat of engineering that would impress anyone-a whole train load of cars goes over the "hump" and everything gets sorted in proper order down multiple tracks as easily as dealing out a deck of cards.
There is a museum with of history all around the location. You can watch multiple videos of the evolution of passenger trains to transport innovations. Many Presidential candidates used this same location for waypoints during campaign trails, and they even have examples of the meals you would have been served during that time period.
Worth a visit if only to see the history."

"This place is fascinating, I loved it. Short video on the history and some more museum-like displays up on the top floor; excellent 360° views. One floor down is the open air viewing area and it's amazing, I think I could watch the trains move about all day. SO MANY TRAINS. Cute gift shop, lots of parking."

"Really cool place! Plenty of parking, clean restrooms and facilities. Multiple video displays to learn about the rail yard, history, etc. And then of course, the tower and the view. The top of the tower is climate controlled and features displays and a volunteer answering questions along with sweeping views of the yard and the surrounding area. The next level down is the open air deck, which offers a great view of the yard along with all the sounds that go with it. Both levels have telescopes, but I recommend bringing your own binoculars to enhance the viewing experience.
Dogs on leashes are welcome in all spaces, inside and outside, and they even offer treats. They also have designated pet play areas with clean up bags, and it seems every pet parent has been responsible for cleaning up, because those areas were free of unpleasant surprises.
Great gift shop too, though they did not have my size in the shirt I wanted. The staff member on site directed me to their online store. Snacks and drinks also available, along with free coffee."
