What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors appreciate Elza Gate Park for its serene natural beauty, historical significance, and access to the Melton Lake Greenway. It's praised as a quiet spot for short walks and birdwatching, with the historic cemetery adding a unique charm. However, some note it's more of a wilderness area than a traditional park and can be muddy after rain.
"March 16, Sunday. After a severe weather system passed through, my canine kid and I opted to hike the paved Greenway instead of the dirt trails elsewhere. We started at the Elza Gate and hiked all the way to the south end the Haw Ridge trailhead. In and out, around 12 miles in 4 hours. Had a pleasant weather today. And the Greenway is well used. Rowing competition was on the Melton lake."

"Elza Gate Park is a former entry point to the Secret City back in the 1940's while top scientists and engineers performed nuclear research and atomic bomb development as part of the Manhattan Project.
I would personally consider this more of a small Wilderness Management Area (WMA) as opposed to a park.
There is a short TVA Worthington Cemetary Trail with a wooden habitat, a cemetery dating back to the 1800s, a pond and several marsh areas. A well built pier extends out to the wetlands with old school binoculars for closer viewing of over 125 bird species [no coins necessary].
This also serves as one of several trailheads for the Melton Lake Greenway.
It is not a mountain bike trail or playground park for kids. Nearby Haw Ridge offers miles and miles of mountain bike trails and there are numerous playground parks in Oak Ridge.
Many of these reviews have nothing to do with this quaint and serene wilderness area, so I've copy and pasted most of my info straight from the Oak Ridge Rec & Parks website so ya'll know what's up.
Note: Since it is a wetland these trails are not good after rainfall."

"This is a beautiful little park for a short walk. The forest along the 0.75 mile loop trail was lush and green. The cemetery was overgrown with grass and wildflowers, but the old headstones and large trees made it intriguing. There are about 15 parking spaces at the trailhead. You can easily access the (paved) Melton Lake Greenway if you want to extend your walk."
