Nantahala National Forest never disappoints. Loving the new @gfc_usa / @ikamper setup! Everything worked flawlessly and was perfectly dry inside after being rained on all night. Matched up with the @redarc_electronics, @dometic fridge/freezer and our induction cooktop, we can go off grid for many days at a time. 😍

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the spectacular clifftop views at Pickens Nose, calling them 'awesome' and 'spectacular' on clear days. The short hike is rewarding, though some note it's not for absolute beginners due to a steady incline. The drive up the gravel road is part of the adventure, with AWD/4x4 recommended but not strictly necessary for all. The misty, cloud-filled experience is also a highlight for many.

"Nice easy walk with a great view at the end. There are 2 or 3 lookouts on the way to pickens nose. I also liked the drive from Otto up there and then driving through past Standing Indian."

Desmond Strydom

"This was not for the beginner hiker at all. Some of the spots were real up hill . The lookout was awesome but the walk was kinda rough."

Brittney Standridge

"The drive up the one lane dirt path 5 miles up the side of a mountain was worth it. Definitely recommend an AWD or 4x4 vehicle to get up. Once you get to the trailhead it's about half mile of steady incline to reach the end. There are done side trails along the way for different views. Parking area can fit about 4 cars"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Navigating the Drive to Pickens Nose

The journey to Pickens Nose Trail is an adventure in itself. The final 5 miles are on a gravel road, often described as a single-lane path winding up the mountainside. While many visitors have successfully navigated it in low-clearance vehicles, it's crucial to be prepared for potential challenges. Sharp, tight turns and areas chewed up by tires can make for a slow and cautious drive. Reddit For those with All-Wheel Drive (AWD) or Four-Wheel Drive (4x4), the drive will be significantly easier and less stressful. Reddit Checking local road conditions before you go is always a wise precaution, especially after heavy rain. Reddit

Some travelers recommend the northern approach for potentially smoother road conditions. Reddit Regardless of your vehicle, take your time, be mindful of oncoming traffic (if any), and enjoy the scenic ascent. The drive offers glimpses of the surrounding wilderness, adding to the overall experience before you even hit the trail. Instagram

The Pickens Nose Hiking Experience

The hike to the Pickens Nose overlook is relatively short, typically under a mile each way. However, don't let the distance fool you; it's a steady, consistent incline that will get your heart pumping. Reddit Hikers often describe the trail as starting off a bit rocky and steep, but the latter half leading to the views becomes easier. Reddit The ascent is approximately 243 feet, making it a good workout for a short trail. Instagram It's important to wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots to navigate the terrain comfortably. Reddit

Along the trail, you'll find a few side trails and lookouts that offer different perspectives of the landscape. Reddit While the main destination is the spectacular clifftop view, these smaller stops can add to the enjoyment of the hike. The trail is well-suited for a quick outing, and many enjoy it as a sunset hike due to its proximity and short duration. Instagram

Capturing the Magic of Pickens Nose

Pickens Nose is a photographer's dream, offering dramatic vistas that change with the weather. On clear days, the panoramic views of the Nantahala National Forest are simply spectacular. Reddit However, many visitors find the most magical experiences occur when the weather is less than perfect. Reddit Hiking during or between thunderstorms can lead to an ethereal, cloud-filled landscape where fog rolls in like 'giants licks,' creating a truly unique and 'trippy' atmosphere. Reddit This is when the rhododendrons, often seen in photos, take on a mystical quality. Reddit

For the best photographic results, consider visiting during golden hour for sunset, which bathes the mountains in warm light. Instagram A wide-angle lens is highly recommended to capture the expansive views. Instagram Don't forget your camera or smartphone, as the scenery is constantly evolving. Even on a misty day, the moody atmosphere can yield stunning, atmospheric shots that stand out from typical sunny mountain photos. Instagram+1
