What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Bell Smith Springs is lauded for its stunning natural beauty, clear swimming waters, and unique rock formations like the Devil's Backbone. However, many visitors express disappointment with the significant amount of litter and graffiti, which detracts from the pristine environment. Trail marking and steepness are also noted challenges for some hikers.
"This is one of the best location in Shawnee national forest. The water is clear and looks clean. The trails are beautiful too. Some kids were swimming and it was great.
One down point is people who had visited on past have left their trash near the spring and on the trail at so many places."
Gajanan Wadekar
"Pros: the area is beautiful with nice hiking trails, clear water for swimming and rocks to jump into the water.
Bathrooms and trash bins available at parking area
Cons: unfortunately there is a significant amount of litter on the trails and at the swimming area. Even a dirty diaper tossed off to the side of the trail.
People were throwing glass beer bottles on the rocks right on the swimming beach.
Graffiti on the natural rock formations
It’s disappointing to see that people are so disrespectful to nature and the work that went into making a place like this available to the public.
Access to these natural areas are a privilege not a right (especially for free ) so please bring in only what you are willing to pack out again and leave nature better then you found it so it will be around for more people and generations to enjoy.
I would have given it 5 stars if it weren’t for the things stated above. I wanted to leave there asap and decided not to camp there because of the condition of the area."
Heidi Cox
"Wonderful hike, I would like to go back. BUT-
It is extremely intense. Very steep, difficult to hike. Trails are NOT well marked. Had a lot of trouble finding and keeping on the yellow trail. Trails are not maintained. Walked past the arch twice before we realized that was the arch. I wish we would’ve taken a picture of the map. We weren’t sure where to go to find the springs to swim in."
