What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Whitefish Point for its stunning Lake Superior views, historic lighthouse, and the poignant Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, especially its connection to the Edmund Fitzgerald. The beach is a highlight for relaxation and rock collecting. However, many reviewers strongly caution about aggressive mosquitoes, particularly in summer, and some feel the site has become more commercialized with added fees.
"We visited on a Wednesday afternoon in July. The weather was much cooler (20* Fahrenheit lower) than St. Ignace. We were prepared with sweatshirts and jackets. The water was choppy and cold on the day we visited. The sand on the beach is fine, sugar sand. We did not need shoes on the beach or at the water’s edge. What rocks were washing up on shore were smooth and tumbled. There were several tidal pools on the shore when we arrived. Bring mosquito repellent! They are abundant, aggressive, and only slightly smaller than pheasants. 😂
Parking was plentiful, public restrooms were clean and well maintained, staff we encountered were knowledgeable and kind. Overall, a great place to see."

"Over the years this place has become more of a tourist trap. It was a beautiful light house that seemed to be trapped in time. Over the years they have added tourist shops and started charging. You can see the beach and lighthouse for free but any of the museums or other things cost. Prices seemed a little steep to me for what it was but that is simply opinion. It is a beautiful area with a Amazing beach and very rich history."

"Was nice. Second trip here but this time the mosquitoes were so thick they would carry you away. So we ran into the gift shop for relief. Lots of cool items for sale and has a museum. Nice overlook of Lake Superior, but again, the mosquitoes were so bad we were outside less than 5 minutes."
