What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the Mammoth Cave Railroad Bike and Hike Trail for its scenic beauty, shade, and historical significance. It's praised as a dog-friendly, well-maintained path perfect for walking or biking. The main drawback for some is the distance to Mammoth Cave itself, and the critical need to book cave tours far in advance.
"Wide gravel path, shaded throughout. Beautiful wildflowers. You can walk, bike, hike from the small parking lot to both Diamond Caverns and Mammoth Cave. It is about 1 mile to Diamond Caverns. I did not walk all the way to Mammoth Cave which looked a lot farther. You can rent electric bikes at Diamond Caverns to ride the trail. Dog friendly."

"This trail is great for a good walk/ hike or bike ride. From the starting point at Park City to the Visitor center is 9 miles. There are only a couple of moderately steep grades. Overall it’s flat to gently rolling. There are several points of interest along the way. And plenty of large trees plus wildlife to enjoy."

"Mammoth Cave is amazing. Great place to take the family to explore the cave or just go for a hike! MAKE SURE TO BOOK CAVE TOUR EARLY! Great thing is they did have a self guided tour that let us at-least go down in the cave, which was still great! Lots of stairs going into the cave and coming out but the paths were pavers so made it nice down in the cave."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
For the main attraction, booking cave tours early is essential for families. Look for tours designated as 'easy' or 'moderate' if you have younger children or those with limited mobility. The park offers a variety of tours, and rangers can help you choose the best fit. A self-guided option, if available, can also be a good fallback if booked tours are full. Seeing the incredible cave formations is a memorable experience for all ages.
🚶♀️ Budget Travelers
While cave tours have a fee, they are generally considered a worthwhile expense for the unique experience. Look for shorter, less expensive tours if budget is a primary concern. The park itself has no entrance fee, making the trail and general park access very budget-friendly.

Exploring the Trail: A Multi-Use Gem
One of the key advantages of this trail is its connectivity. It links the town of Park City to the Mammoth Cave Visitor Center, allowing for a longer journey or shorter excursions. A popular segment is the approximately 1-mile stretch to Diamond Caverns, a significant natural attraction accessible directly from the trail. For those looking to cover more ground, electric bikes can be rented at Diamond Caverns, offering a convenient way to explore the trail's length. The trail's gentle grades make it manageable for most fitness levels, though some sections do present moderate inclines.
Beyond the physical activity, the trail serves as a gateway to understanding the area's past. Following the old railroad bed offers a tangible connection to the historical development of tourism in Mammoth Cave. It’s a place where you can breathe in the history while enjoying the present-day natural splendor. Remember to bring water and snacks, as amenities are sparse along the route, and always check park advisories for any trail conditions or closures.
Mammoth Cave Tours: Booking is Key
The most critical piece of advice for anyone planning a visit is to book cave tours well in advance. Demand is consistently high, and popular tours, especially those during peak seasons (spring break, summer, fall foliage), can sell out weeks or even months ahead of time. Websites like Recreation.gov are the primary platform for booking these tours. Visitors who haven't booked ahead may find themselves with limited options or unable to tour at all. While self-guided tours are sometimes available, they are not the norm for the main cave system.
When choosing a tour, consider your group's mobility and comfort level with enclosed spaces and stairs. Some tours involve significant stair climbing, while others are more level. The park rangers provide excellent guidance on selecting the most appropriate tour. Experiencing the vastness and unique geology of Mammoth Cave is an unforgettable part of any trip to the area, and proper planning ensures you don't miss out.
