"Great place! There's Zane Grey's Cabin (You cannot take photos inside) and a self guided tour museum (You CAN take pictures there.) Also a really nice gift shop. We enjoyed seeing the fire truck that they are restoring, the school house, and learning about the devasting fire and 'hotshots' fighting it. Very interesting place, highly recommend."

"Adorable museum with local history and super knowledgeable staff. Very enjoyable. Go here and then walk around the park for a great way to kill a couple of hours. Don’t miss the upstairs in the museum. Buy something at the gift shop on your way out - recommend the cactus jam. Yum."

"This is one of the best small town museums I've had the pleasure of stepping into. Two tours are offered: one guided tour through a replica of Zane Gray's cabin that takes about 20-30 minutes, the other is a self-guided tour through the second story museum.

A ticket for both tours together costs 10 dollars. Each by itself costs 5 dollars. There are senior citizen and first responder(?) discounts.

The docent volunteers are friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate.

The museum exhibits are easy to read and digest, the displays and artifacts themselves are fantastic, and there is more packed in here than you would expect at first glance. Even someone without a passion for history will walk out of this place satisfied.

The gift shop has a great selection of gifts, apparal, and many local and regional books.

I will definitely be back, and recommend this as a great place to stop in Payson."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Legacy of Zane Grey

The Rim Country Museum pays homage to Zane Grey, a prolific American novelist renowned for his Western fiction. Though originally from Ohio, Grey found inspiration in the rugged landscapes of Arizona, making the Rim Country a significant backdrop for his stories. The museum features a replica of his cabin, offering a glimpse into his life and creative space. Visitors can learn about his dual career as a dentist and author, and his adventurous spirit that led him to explore the West. Reddit

Grey's connection to the area was deep, though his time there was marked by both inspiration and frustration. He famously took a film crew to his cabin, intending to go on a bear hunt. When denied a special permit after the season had ended, he left Arizona feeling betrayed, never to return. This anecdote highlights the complex relationship between the author and the land that so vividly shaped his literary world. Reddit

The museum's exhibits delve into Grey's personality, writing style, and lifestyle, providing a comprehensive understanding of his impact on American literature. Even for those not deeply familiar with his work, the stories presented offer a compelling narrative of a man who captured the spirit of the American West.

Preserving Rim Country History

Beyond Zane Grey, the museum is a treasure trove of Rim Country's local history. Exhibits showcase artifacts dating back as far as 1300 AD, offering a tangible connection to the region's ancient past. Visitors can learn about the area's development, including the vital role of 'hotshots' and firefighting efforts in combating devastating wildfires that have shaped the landscape. Reddit

A significant part of the museum's narrative is dedicated to William Goettl, the individual responsible for building the replica Zane Grey cabin. After renovating the original cabin, it tragically burned down in 1990. Goettl's dedication to preserving this piece of history is a testament to the community's commitment to its heritage. The museum staff, largely comprised of passionate volunteers, do an excellent job of recounting these stories with enthusiasm and knowledge. Reddit

The displays are thoughtfully curated, making them easy to read and digest. From historical tools to personal accounts, the museum offers a rich and varied perspective on the people and events that have defined Rim Country. It's a place where history comes alive, satisfying even those who may not typically consider themselves history buffs.
