Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul for its stunning architecture, intricate artistry, and profound sense of history and spirituality. Many are awestruck by its grandeur, comparing it favorably to European cathedrals. It's seen as a peaceful sanctuary for prayer and reflection, regardless of religious affiliation.

"Daily Mass & Confessions!

Church open until 5pm for anyone to walk in and spend some quiet time in prayer and meditation!

Go further and schedule a tour! The history of this place is absolutely incredible! The building survived a long period of attacks while the faithful survived also a long challenging time for simply professing their faith!

This is the cathedral because it is the bishop’s church and this is also the shrine of St. Katherine Drexel because this incredible Philadelphian woman is buried here! Katherine was the first person to foster high education for native, brown, and black people in the United States!

If you choose to come to Mass in the weekend, be ready to be amazed by the beautiful liturgy this church offers! It makes even the most skeptical person to look heavenward in awe!"

Giovani Briguente

"May be the biggest Cathedral in Philly. Beautiful architecture! So massive inside! You can go in most times to sit and pray. This is where they have a lot of fallen Police and Fireman funerals."

Thomas Cleveland

"Even though I’m not Catholic, I visited the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul out of respect and curiosity—and I’m really glad I did. The architecture is absolutely stunning, and you can feel the history in every corner of the space. It’s a peaceful, awe-inspiring place to take in, whether you’re religious or not. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area and appreciate beautiful, historic buildings."

Architectural Marvel: A Blend of Styles

The Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul is a stunning example of Second Empire and Roman-Corinthian architecture. Designed by Napoleon LeBrun, its construction began in 1846 and was consecrated in 1864, with later additions and embellishments. The basilica's most striking feature is its massive dome, inspired by St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, which dominates the Philadelphia skyline. The exterior is characterized by its imposing facade, while the interior boasts a grandeur that rivals many European cathedrals. Instagram

Inside, visitors are greeted by a symphony of ornate details. The nave is flanked by Corinthian columns supporting a richly decorated entablature. The stained glass windows are not merely decorative; they are narrative, depicting scenes from scripture and the lives of saints. The side chapels house beautiful mosaics and altars, each with its own unique artistic merit. The sheer scale and the meticulous craftsmanship evident throughout the basilica create an atmosphere of profound reverence and artistic appreciation. Reddit

One of the basilica's significant historical aspects is its survival through periods of adversity, reflecting the resilience of faith. It also serves as the bishop's church, making it the principal church of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. This dual role as a place of worship and a historical monument makes it a compelling destination for both religious pilgrims and architecture enthusiasts. Reddit

The Spiritual Heart: Mass and Devotion

As the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul is a vibrant center of Catholic life. It hosts regular daily Masses and weekend services, offering a rich liturgical experience. Visitors and parishioners alike can participate in these services, finding solace and spiritual connection within its sacred walls. The beautiful liturgy and the grandeur of the setting often leave attendees in awe. InstagramReddit

Beyond regular Mass, the basilica also offers confession services, providing an opportunity for spiritual reconciliation. For those seeking a more personal connection, the church is open for quiet prayer and meditation during its visiting hours. This peaceful ambiance allows individuals to step away from the bustle of the city and find a moment of tranquility and reflection. Reddit

The basilica is also a significant pilgrimage site, notably as the resting place of Saint Katherine Drexel. Her shrine is a focal point for many visitors, honoring her legacy of education and service to marginalized communities. The presence of such a revered figure adds another layer of spiritual depth to the experience of visiting the cathedral. Reddit

A Glimpse into History: Surviving Adversity

The history of the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul is intertwined with the history of Philadelphia and the Catholic Church in America. Its construction in the mid-19th century was a bold statement of the growing Catholic presence in the United States. The basilica has weathered periods of anti-Catholic sentiment and societal change, standing as a testament to enduring faith. Reddit

During times of hardship, the faithful found strength and refuge within its walls. The building itself has been a silent witness to significant historical events, including serving as a place for funerals of fallen Police and Firemen, underscoring its role in the community's collective memory. This resilience and historical significance contribute to the profound sense of history one feels when stepping inside. Reddit

The basilica's architectural evolution also tells a story. While consecrated in 1864, subsequent additions and renovations have continued to shape its appearance and functionality, reflecting changing artistic tastes and liturgical needs. This ongoing history makes it a living monument, not just a static relic of the past. TikTok
