What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors often praise the historical significance and architectural beauty of Old City Hall locations. The free access in Philadelphia and the unique tours in NYC are frequently highlighted as major draws. However, limited access and occasional crowds can be drawbacks for some.
"From 1791, up to the construction of Washington, D.C. ending in 1800 and resulting in the movement of the capital up to that very location on the Potomac River, this such building served as the home of the first United States Supreme Court and was also where many of the first court cases, would have been argued in the United States Supreme Court. After the capital was moved, this building housed the city of Philadelphia's City Hall building and law operations before the passage of the 1854 Consolidation Act moved the City Hall to the modern building in the heart of Center City.
Coming into this building, you can admire the historic charm and glory that would have once been the home of the highest court in the continental United States. The candles and chairs are all historically restored, with some of the lighting sources being native to how they were 230 years ago, during court sessions where arguments on issues such as state representation, taxation, state rights, and individual land ownership arguments would have persisted during the time of the court
The pulpit, also to the side, could have also been a relic of the jury that many court cases would have had. Making the backstory of the Hall interesting to know of. Additionally, a collection of historical images to the back wall also acts as a historical walk-through of the justices and chief justices, ranging from John Jay and Thomas Cushing, all the way up to Oliver Ellsworth and Samuel Chase.
Overall, this attraction should be visited when on the Independence Mall, as it allows for people to experience US History upfront and see what was once to offer in the courts of Jay, Rutledge, and Ellsworth."

"The Old City Hall / First Supreme Court is a great thing to see if you're in a group waiting in line to see Independence Hall. I waited in line while my wife and sons took a look and then went in to see it myself when they returned. The gift shop for Independence Hall is in Old City Hall as well, so you can also do a bit of souvenir shopping if you like.
To think that the first rulings of the U.S. Supreme Court were handed down in the room is remarkable. Not to be missed!"
