Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Pinnacles Overlook to be a unique and awe-inspiring natural formation, with many recommending it as a must-see in Crater Lake National Park. The drive to get there is also noted as scenic. Some visitors found the hike beyond the initial viewpoint to be less rewarding than expected, and parking can be challenging on busy days.

"Since the Rim Road is closed by the Pinnacles turnoff we came around to the old entrance of the park. Had the whole place to ourselves!! Absolutely awesome."

Jens Lambert

"Pretty neat formations created by the volcanic eruption.

“These towering needle-like formations of rock, called fossil fumaroles, projecting from the Sand Creek Canyon floor, were formed under sheets of volcanic pumice that preceded Mazama’s collapse. As the surface of the hot pumice cooled over the years, steam and gases were released by the hot rocks underneath through vents and tubes that were welded into cement hardness by their passage. These ancient vents now stand alone due to the erosion of the surrounding softer materials,” from Crater Lake website."

"We visited here in September, which seems to be the ideal time to come. It was so clear and not too hot. If you come to Crater Lake, this is one thing I would recommend doing. This valley is amazing, this is a true artwork of nature. There are very few similar places in the world.
You do not need to walk far from the parking to see the best examples of the Pinnacles, though the trail goes for quite a distance along the valley side. The best views are a few hundred feet down where there is a viewing area.
The drive down here is also really nice with the chance to see other things like the waterfalls.
If you have your own car, I would certainly recommend taking the time to visit the Pinnacles."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding the Pinnacles' Formation

The Pinnacles are a remarkable geological feature, often described as 'fossil fumaroles.' They were formed from volcanic ash that preceded the major collapse of Mount Mazama, the volcano that created Crater Lake. As the surface of this hot pumice cooled, steam and gases escaped through vents, welding the surrounding material into hard tubes. Reddit

Over millennia, erosion has stripped away the softer surrounding ash, leaving these hardened vents standing as towering, needle-like spires. This process has created a landscape that feels almost alien, a testament to the powerful volcanic forces that shaped the region. Reddit

Visitors can observe these formations from the overlook and along a trail that follows Sand Creek Canyon. The sheer scale and unique shapes of the Pinnacles make them a must-see for geology enthusiasts and anyone interested in the dramatic history of Crater Lake National Park. Reddit

Planning Around the Cleetwood Cove Trail Closure

A significant change for visitors to Crater Lake is the upcoming closure of the Cleetwood Cove Trail, the only path that leads to the lake's shore. This trail is essential for those wishing to swim in the lake or take boat tours to Wizard Island. TikTok+1

The trail is slated to close at the end of 2025 for extensive renovations and is not expected to reopen until 2029. This means that for the next several years, direct access to the water from the rim will be unavailable. TikTok+1

Travelers planning trips between 2025 and 2029 should adjust their expectations. Focus will shift to enjoying the stunning views from the rim, hiking other accessible trails like Garfield Peak or Watchman Peak, and exploring overlooks such as the Pinnacles and Sinnott Memorial. TikTok+1

Maximizing Your Visit to Crater Lake National Park

Crater Lake National Park offers a wealth of natural beauty beyond just the lake itself. While the Pinnacles provide a unique geological perspective, don't miss other key viewpoints like the Sinnott Memorial Overlook for panoramic vistas. TikTokInstagram

For those who enjoy hiking, the Garfield Peak Trail is highly recommended for its challenging ascent and rewarding views of the lake and Wizard Island. TikTok Other popular trails include the Watchman Tower Trail, offering a different vantage point. Instagram

Remember that the park's high elevation means weather can change rapidly. Always check conditions before heading out, and be prepared for cooler temperatures even in summer. TikTok With the lake shore access closing, prioritizing rim-level experiences will be key for future visits. TikTok
