What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the unreal, breathtaking summit views and the vibrant wildflowers, calling it a top-tier hike. The trail offers a unique perspective of Kirkwood Ski Resort and is well-marked. Some hikers encountered snow patches early in the season, requiring caution and proper gear, and a few found the rocky scramble at the top challenging.
"Tried from horse canyon trailhead during Memorial Day to much snow plus a large river to cross, had to turn back. Tried 3 weeks later on this trailhead to summit (06/11/2025) made the trip in 6 hours total. Had to go off trail due to some light snow patches worth the effort. Top 10 hikes Iโve done and would totally recommend starting from this trailhead instead. Wear good shoes lots of loose rocks and soil on the path. Great early bloom of some wild flowers too!"

"Went for an afternoon hike in early June. The first 3/4-1 mile goes through a burn section. The trail through this area was clear, well-travelled, and easy to follow. Once you reach the ridge, the views are incredible in all directions. There were still snow fields at the time. As I was not using AllTrails that day, I was unable to see the correct trail, so after passing the second large rock formation on the ridge, I followed a visible trail which ultimately heads down into Kirkwood. I knew I had to follow the ridgeline and should not be descending, so once the trail began to descend, I backtracked to the snow field, located some old shoe prints, and followed them. I picked up the trail, then lost it for a while in a second snow field. This time, I made my way along the ridge until the snow field ended. I got to a set of switchbacks at 8600' (about 2.3 miles in), where I encountered a third field that was considerably steeper and for which I wasn't correctly equipped (i had poles, but hadnt brought spikes), and was no longer comfortable continuing by myself, so turned around. I look forward to going back to reach the peak. I encountered about 10 people on the trail that day, most within the first mile. After the first snow field, I had the trail to myself the rest of the day. It was very quiet and peaceful. As you can see in the photos I've included, you're able to see Kirkwood and Caples Lakes. From the peak, you're also able to see Silver Lake."

"Amazing hike. Unreal views. You hiking up the backside of Kirkwood ski resort. Moderate hike. In and out is around 7 miles and worth every minute for the views. Took around 5 hours at a casual pace and you gain around 2k feet on the hike. Summit is 9k and some change so it is mildly taxing. Great hike. Great for the whole family."
