Kayaking and camping at Point Reyes and Tomales Bay was an incredible experience! We had the most amazing time completely secluded, kayaking, camping, hiking, eating, and drinking with my childhood friends. I can’t wait to return next year and bring my family on this adventure. . A huge thank you to @pointreyesadventureco for making the entire experience possible! They pack everything you need for...

Kayaking Tomales Bay - Such a beautiful & solitary location. Very primitive camping. Kayak in and out to your site. Pack it in and pack it out - yes everything, take doggy bags 😅 Limited cell phone service. We went to see the meteor shower but @karlthefog ruined the show 😂 however, we did experience some really cool bioluminescence on the sand & water once it got completely dark outdoors. Wish ...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the exceptional customer service at places like Blue Waters Kayaking, highlighting the staff's kindness and helpfulness. The natural beauty of Tomales Bay, especially the bioluminescent displays and abundant wildlife, receives rave reviews, creating a sense of wonder and peace. Some find the wind challenging, and primitive camping requires thorough preparation.

"I was having a rough week and decided to rent a half-day kayak from Blue Waters Kayaking. Pamalah, Koben, Jeff and the squat guy (sorry I didn’t catch his name!) were all so kind and welcoming. They really went out of their way to make the process easy and made me feel comfortable before heading out.

The paddle itself was beautiful, but what stood out most was how genuinely nice everyone was. It turned what could’ve just been a rental into a really positive experience I needed that day. I can’t recommend this place enough - if you’re looking for a peaceful escape on the water with people who truly care, Blue Waters Kayaking is the spot. I’ll definitely be coming back!!!"

"Awesome system Blue Water Kayak operates. Appreciate their knowledge in helping create a trip that inspired & awed!

The bioluminescent bloom was a sight to see. Without a doubt mind-blowing. Activated deep inner childlike wonder & laughter felt among all in the group."

Cody Tree

"As a part of SF Climate Week, ProgramEarth arranged a kayaking tour to spread awareness about Coast Miwok people and Tamal Liwa. This tour was well organized and we got a heads up for the all the things we need to bring and forms we need to sign days ahead by Blue Water Kayaking including directions.

The guides were amazing and worked pro bono for this event. (Please don’t forget to tip your amazing guides).

We were fitted with wind breakers, skirts and PFDs. We kayaked out from hearts desire beach until Felix cove, broke for lunch and returned back. Tomales Bay is gorgeous and the day was a little windy. Thankfully, the sea kayaks had a rudder that was crucial in keeping us from getting swept by the wind. It’s a bit of a learning curve tbh.
The guides made sure we all didn’t stray too far away from the coast. Made a bunch of stops to spot birds and mussels. Lots of sea grass and kelp under us.

Highly recommend!"

Experiencing Tomales Bay Bioluminescence

The bioluminescence in Tomales Bay is a truly enchanting phenomenon, caused by microscopic plankton that emit a blue-green light when disturbed. This natural light show is best witnessed on dark, moonless nights, making it a prime target for night kayaking tours. Visitors often describe the experience as magical, with the water glowing around their paddles and kayaks. TikTokReddit

To maximize your chances of seeing the bioluminescence, plan your visit during the warmer months, typically from late spring through fall, though sightings can occur year-round. These tours often depart from locations like Heart's Desire Beach and are led by guides knowledgeable about the best viewing conditions and safety protocols. TikTokReddit

When planning your bioluminescence adventure, remember that clear skies are ideal, as moonlight can diminish the glow. For the best wildlife viewing, aim for early morning or late afternoon when animals are often most active. Paddling quietly and maintaining a respectful distance is key to not disturbing the wildlife. Many guided tours include stops at known wildlife hotspots, providing an educational and enriching experience. Instagram
