What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Riverside Golf Club is widely praised as a beautiful and challenging municipal course with excellent greens and a memorable layout featuring significant elevation changes. Visitors appreciate the good value and friendly staff, though some note a lack of course etiquette from fellow players and the absence of on-course water stations.
"What a fun and beautiful golf course. Lots of contour and hills and truly memorable holes. Good pro shop, helpful staff, and a nice bar and patio for after the round.
Just to mention - there isn't any drinking water provided on the course while you're out playing (available in the pro shop, nothing on the course). People don't respect or take care of the course or where they are; unbuttoned shirts, backward hats, ripped or dirty t-shirts, don't replace divots or fix ball marks. It's too bad, as this is a wonderful course to play, either walking or riding in a cart."

"This municipal course is an absolute gem. It has a great layout with a lot of elevation changes and some blind shots. I like that the rough isn't exactly punitive. You can usually find your ball. Because of the layout, if you spray tee shots, you're not gonna find your ball. But you are gonna find a whole bunch of balls that aren't yours. Most of the municipal courses that I play have a hard time keeping the greens consistent. The greens at riverside are fantastic. But I did give them some feedback. They need to roll the greens so that they aren't so slow. I know that it's early in the season and if I'm understanding correctly, they've only been open for about a month. Still, the speed of the greens certainly feeds a great deal of emotion into a round of golf. A little more about those greens. There's a few that are big and flat. There are also some that have false fronts. And if they rolled those greens, the false fronts would be penalizing players who come in short on their approach shots. This is a very big municipal golf course. I only played one part of it. I'm probably gonna head back.
I tee'd off at 740a and the course was full. Nevertheless, we finished eighteen holes of golf by 1215p. I had a tucson, spicy chicken sandwich and a soft drink from the restaurant bar area. They've got a huge deck. That you can sit on and see a lot of the course. The pro shop on the restaurant are on the top of a hill. I can't say enough good things about this course. The starter, paired me with a member and two other guys. I had a great round of golf today at a really good price. I would say about 50% of the players were walking and using pull carts. That's a heck of a walk for some of those elevation changes."

"Came here just for foliage pictures and they did not disappoint. I usually see quite a few golfers in the area using this course, seems popular. The course was clean and also excellent views for patrons!"

Navigating the Terrain: Elevation and Walking
For those who prefer to conserve energy, golf carts are available. However, even with a cart, you'll still encounter the undulating terrain. The strategic placement of hazards and the varied topography mean that a well-struck shot can be rewarded, but errant shots might find themselves in challenging lies due to the contours of the land. It's this unique landscape that many golfers find so memorable and engaging.
When planning your visit, factor in the physical demands if you intend to walk. The beauty of the course is undeniable, but it's a beauty that comes with a bit of a climb. The staff is generally helpful, and the overall experience is considered excellent value, making the effort worthwhile for many golfers.
Course Conditions and Player Etiquette
However, a recurring theme in reviews is the lack of respect for course etiquette shown by some players. This includes not repairing divots, failing to fix ball marks on greens, and general disregard for the course's upkeep. This behavior is disappointing to many who appreciate the course and its staff. It's a reminder that the collective effort of all players is crucial in maintaining such a valuable community asset.
Despite these occasional frustrations, the overall sentiment towards the course condition and the staff remains positive. The pro shop and restaurant staff are frequently mentioned as friendly and helpful. The club's commitment to providing a high-quality municipal golf experience is evident, making it a popular choice for golfers in the Portland area.
