A genuine original Pirate Jolly Roger. Note it is red not black. The National Museum of the Royal Navy at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is currently displaying this genuine Jolly Roger pirate flag dated from c1790, It is believed that this flag was captured by Admiral Richard Curry somewhere off the coast of North Africa. The title Jolly Roger is thought to come from the French phrase "joli rouge"...

"This Museum maybe be small but it’s full of amazing history covering Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the Norfolk Greater Area from the Colonial Era to today.

The Museum also includes a tour of a lighthouse ship the Portsmouth during warm weather."

David Waugh

"Nice small museum with a great amount of information about the local history. This also services the Lightship Portsmouth, and the nearby hog Island Lens display. Great place to take kids for a fun, educational experience. They also have a lot of special events. We happened to arrive one evening when they had an open house."

Michael Unruh

"Didn’t go inside the museum but the location is stunningly beautiful. I can see why ships from Liverpool and elsewhere from across the North Atlantic (expecting God knows what in the colony of Virginia) would land here with and without the enslaved and Indentured on board. The beginning of the end for the indigenous and the beginning of the new world north made by the settler colonialists and their slaves."

Pirate Flags and Naval History

While primarily focused on the naval shipyard, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum has, at times, displayed fascinating artifacts that connect to broader maritime history, including tales of piracy. One such notable display featured a genuine Jolly Roger pirate flag, dated from around 1790. This flag, noted for its red hue rather than the more commonly depicted black, is believed to have been captured by Admiral Richard Curry off the coast of North Africa. TikTok+1

The display of such an artifact highlights the complex and often intertwined nature of naval history, where naval forces encountered and sometimes subdued figures like pirates. The museum's ability to showcase items like this, even if temporarily, adds an exciting layer to the visitor experience, bridging the gap between formal naval operations and the more adventurous, often romanticized, aspects of maritime lore. TikTok+1

This connection to pirate history, even through a captured flag, sparks imagination and provides a unique talking point. It reminds visitors that the seas have always been a place of both commerce and conflict, adventure and danger, and the naval forces played a critical role in navigating these realities. TikTok+1
