What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Racetrack Playa to be a unique and awe-inspiring destination, particularly for its mysterious moving rocks and stark, alien landscape. However, the challenging and lengthy drive, coupled with extreme heat in warmer months, deters some. The remoteness and lack of services require significant preparation.
"Such a hard place to get to, we left Vegas at 1 am and got there around 5 am before sunrise. The drive is no joke, we rented a Jeep Rubicon and it was great. Do not try this trip in the summer....."

"Interpretive sign inscription:
Rocks sometimes tumble from the mountains, landing on the playa and "racing" around, leaving mysterious tracks on the surface. These moving rocks are at the southern end of the playa.
For years, these moving rocks were a mystery. The tracks prove to everyone that rocks slide, and all believed that high desert winds must surely play a role. Many theories were proposed, but no one had ever seen a boulder slide across dirt or mud. Then in 2013 and 2014, a group of scientists led by cousins James and Richard Norris used scientific instruments to monitor the rocks and discovered the truth.
With enough rain, this end of the playa becomes a shallow lake. In winter, cold night temperatures freeze the surface of the lake into a sheet of floating ice, embedding the rocks. The morning sun causes the ice sheets to break up. Steady breezes catch the floating ice sheets, pushing them along with their embedded rocks. This explains why so many of the rocks leave parallel tracks. Eventually the ice melts and the water evaporates, leaving the rocks in new locations, and the next event, perhaps years later moves them again.
Many of the rocks leave parallel tracks, shopping and turning in unison."

"It’s cool place ,but to drive 27 mile for 2:30 h !? It’s too much for what you will see to the end 😳
-4x4 car
-extra tire
-visit morning time if you can ,it’s too hot later
If you want to visit all of the interesting place in Death Valley should start from 8 h and start with Race track ,you can do it for one day but it’s hard,if you take a hotel for a day it will be better ! Hotels price in Death Valley 500$+
Enjoy!"

🎫 🧭 Onsite Experience
The 'sailing stones' phenomenon is rare and requires a specific combination of conditions: shallow water, freezing temperatures overnight, and steady winds. This most commonly occurs during winter months.
The sailing stones are rocks that mysteriously move across the playa, leaving trails. Scientists discovered they move when a thin layer of water freezes overnight, embedding the rocks in ice. Light winds then push the ice sheets, sliding the rocks.
The sliding rocks and their trails are most concentrated at the southern end of Racetrack Playa. Driving to the very end of the playa and exploring on foot offers the best opportunities.
Dress in layers suitable for desert conditions. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are essential for walking on the rough playa surface. Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen) is vital.
Absolutely! Racetrack Playa offers unique photographic opportunities with its stark landscapes, dramatic light, and the intriguing trails left by the moving rocks. The dark skies also make it a prime spot for astrophotography.
📸 📸 Photography
Sunrise and sunset offer dramatic lighting and long shadows, enhancing the alien landscape. The dark night skies are also exceptional for astrophotography, especially during a new moon.
A wide-angle lens is great for capturing the vastness of the playa. A telephoto lens can be useful for isolating the Grandstand rocks or distant mountain views. A sturdy tripod is essential for low-light and astrophotography.
Focus on the 'sailing stones' and their trails, the cracked mud patterns of the playa, the imposing Grandstand rocks, and the expansive desert vistas. The unique geological formations are also compelling.
Use a slower shutter speed to show motion blur in the trails if the rocks are moving. If they are stationary, focus on the textures and patterns they create on the playa surface.
Extreme heat, dust, and the rough road can be challenging. Protecting your gear from dust and heat is crucial. The remoteness means you need to be self-sufficient with power and equipment.
