What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the stunning ocean views and beautiful rolling hills, describing the scenery as breathtaking and feeling like a vacation. The trails offer a good workout with varied terrain, and sunsets are particularly magical. However, the new parking reservation system is a point of contention, and some find the trails confusing or steep.
"The parking situation is sketchy. If you want to park close to the trail you have to pay about $10-$11 through a mobile app. I parked 2 blocks down from the entrance of the hike and thankfully I didn't get a ticket. After walking for about 10 minutes straight, I ran into 3 different trails. I explored 2 of them and the scenery was amazing. You get to enjoy the mountain view on one side and the ocean in the other. It's definitely a workout. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely be back to explore it further."

"This trail system has ocean views and gentle rolling hills. Not super steep but lots of variety in terrain. You can see Catalina on clear days. It's a bit rocky so wear good shoes. Parking can be tricky, but once you're in it feels untouched. Amazing for sunrise hikes."

"It was kind of confusing on where to start and where to park. We found a parking lot that was $6 a car (which I thought was reasonable). And then we just started walking. There are a lot of different trails to go on and a lot of steep paths, as well. We walked by the beach that was full of rocks of all shapes and sizes. They had such cool markings on them! I guess depending on which trails you take, depends on how difficult the hike is. If you’re in the area and are into hiking.. check this place out!"

Navigating the Trails and Terrain
When exploring, be prepared for the possibility of encountering different trail conditions. Some paths lead down to a unique rocky beach, offering a different perspective of the coastline. The sheer number of branching trails can be a bit confusing for first-time visitors, but this also means there's plenty to explore on repeat visits. Always pay attention to trail markers and consider your fitness level when choosing your route. Packing plenty of water is essential, as amenities are scarce within the preserve.
The Parking Predicament
While the reservation system aims to streamline access, it's a crucial detail to plan for. Failing to secure a reservation for the designated street parking areas can result in tickets. Some reviews suggest that while the official reservation parking is $10, other nearby lots might offer different pricing, though this can vary. Planning ahead and booking your parking slot is highly recommended to ensure a smooth start to your visit and avoid any last-minute stress.
Capturing the Coastal Beauty
For the best photographic results, timing is key. Sunrise and sunset are particularly magical, as the low-angled light bathes the landscape in warm, golden hues and creates dramatic skies. Even midday offers clear, bright conditions perfect for capturing the vibrant blues of the ocean. The unique rocky beach also presents opportunities for interesting close-up shots of natural textures and patterns. Remember to bring a wide-angle lens to capture the expansive vistas and consider a telephoto lens for distant details.
