What Travellers Say

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Middle Fork River Forest Preserve for its potential as Illinois' premier dark sky destination and its diverse recreational offerings like hiking and fishing. However, some express disappointment with the presence of white lights within the preserve, which detract from the intended darkness. Efforts are underway to improve the dark sky experience and trail amenities.

"This is supposed to be the only approved “dark sky” location in the entire state of Illinois. Is there a sign anywhere leading to this location? No there is none. And then you get there and you are welcomed by lights. Why? Its a dark sky trail in a dark sky location! Every little light just ruins the view. Ironically one of the signs tells you to use red lights instead of the white lights. Should have listened to your own advice. Otherwise the trail is pretty new and clean obviously. I was truly hoping that it would be a lot darker than it was along with the area around it. Also, it does help to have a sign to tell visitors."

Miller George

"The trail is very lovely, but the white LED lights along the path have to go! I love nature and was expecting darkness but was extremely disappointed. It has so much potential to be a great dark sky area, but now it's just a walking path with bright lights."

Mary Kilian

"Miller George did not have a good experience, but these lights are suitable for viewing. Maybe having a bad quality phone expecting a lot did not occur to him? It’s a great experience. I had bad experiences prior to this but this new trail is an awesome addition"
