Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking scenic beauty and the well-maintained trails of Red Mountain Mount McDowell Viewpoint, highlighting it as a serene escape. The spacious sites and helpful hosts at nearby campgrounds are also frequently mentioned positives. Some visitors expressed concerns about mask usage during busy periods.

"great residents, staff, food, activities, location just a wonderful place"

Wayne Smith

"We have returned to this park for the last four years. It is beautiful, well maintained and one of the best settings possible for an rv park. The on site hosts are always welcoming and helpful. The many trails that are accessible from the campground make it easy to hike a short distance or choose a longer trek. The sites are spacious and the bathrooms clean and well kept. I highly recommend this spot. The only drawback is that they cap your visit to two weeks at a time on a particular site."

Lucio Pihanna

"I am only giving this trail 2 stars, not because of anything else ( because it is beautiful) but because on a busy Sunday i only saw two people wearing masks, i worry now even though i had mine on i will get sick and bring it home to my family."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Hiking Red Mountain Trails

Red Mountain offers a network of trails catering to various fitness levels. The most popular route leads to the summit, providing unparalleled panoramic views of the surrounding Sonoran Desert, including the distant city skylines of Phoenix and Mesa. These trails are generally well-maintained, but can be rocky and uneven, making sturdy footwear essential. Reddit

When planning your hike, consider the season. During the cooler months from October to April, daytime temperatures are pleasant for hiking. However, summer months (May to September) can be extremely hot, making early morning or late evening excursions the only viable options. Always carry ample water, as dehydration is a significant risk in the desert environment. Reddit

Beyond the summit trail, explore shorter loops that meander through the desert floor, showcasing unique cacti, resilient wildflowers (especially after rains), and the diverse desert fauna. Keep an eye out for desert tortoises, various lizard species, and numerous bird types. Remember to respect the natural habitat and observe wildlife from a safe distance. Reddit

Capturing the Desert Light

The Red Mountain Mount McDowell Viewpoint is a photographer's dream, especially during the 'golden hours' of sunrise and sunset. The low-angle sunlight casts long shadows, accentuates the textures of the desert landscape, and paints the sky in vibrant hues of orange, pink, and purple. These times offer the most dramatic and visually appealing light for capturing the essence of the Sonoran Desert. Reddit

For landscape photography, a wide-angle lens is highly recommended to encompass the vastness of the scenery. Consider bringing a tripod to ensure sharp images, especially in lower light conditions. Look for interesting foreground elements, such as unique rock formations or desert plants, to add depth and interest to your compositions. The winding trails themselves can also serve as leading lines in your photographs. Reddit

When photographing wildlife, patience and a telephoto lens are your best friends. Maintain a respectful distance to avoid disturbing the animals. Common sightings include desert tortoises, various lizards, and numerous bird species. Remember that the desert is a delicate ecosystem, so practice Leave No Trace principles and capture memories without impacting the environment. Reddit
