What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are captivated by the Old First Parish Burying Ground's unique blend of historical gravestone artistry and its stunning, rugged oceanfront setting. Many appreciate the well-preserved 18th-century carvings and the peaceful, reflective atmosphere. While the site is small, its scenic beauty and historical significance make it a worthwhile stop for those interested in early New England heritage.
"I try to visit as many old burial grounds around New England as I can. My interest is the hand carvings on the grave stones made before 1800-when the original styles changed. The Old First Parish Cemetery in Rockport has some beautifully carved grave stones that are still well preserved. This is a little surprising as the graveyard looks out over a rough and punishing ocean. The setting for the cemetery is extremely scenic and because the cemetery is not extensive so you can see most of the grave stones in less than an hour. It is a good way to see some of the original art work on the graves of some of new England's first settlers."
