What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
La Jolla Shores Beach is celebrated for its stunning beauty, clear waters, and abundant marine life, including seals and sharks. Visitors love the family-friendly atmosphere and nearby dining options. However, the beach can become extremely crowded in summer, leading to significant parking challenges and long waits for facilities.
"Beautiful beach with crystal clear waters most of the time. I've seen lots of fish, some small leopard sharks, dolphins, jellyfish, and stingrays (beware!). It's family friendly with lots of sand, and a grassy area to play as well. They also have a small playground and bathrooms. I also like that there are many cute restaurants within walking distance from the beach. We like to walk over there after a fun day and enjoy a meal by the sea (not ocean view, but close enough)
However, the reason for the 3 stars instead of five is how crowded it gets in the summer. The parking lot is always full, so most people have to park on the side streets which are very narrow and hard to get through (cars have to take turns driving past where there are cars parked, like it's almost a one-way street except that it's not). During one of the weekends in summer, the bathroom line was over 20 people! I was so glad I didn't need to go. The only good thing about the crowds, is that so many people scare away the stingrays, so there's that.
Overall, I'd recommend this beach on a weekday. It's still a bit crowded, but obviously we go here often, so it's worth it."

"This is a coastal gem that offers something for everyone! The scenery is stunning, with dramatic cliffs, clear blue waters, and abundant wildlife.
One of the best things about La Jolla is the opportunity to see seals and sea lions up close. They often lounge on the rocks and beaches, making for fantastic photo opportunities. The tide pools are also great for exploring, revealing a variety of marine life.
Whether you're looking to relax on the sand, swim in the ocean, or explore the natural beauty, La Jolla Beach is a must-visit destination in San Diego!"

"Beautiful area to watch seals and birds and great view. Easy to get to, a bit crowded to find parking, lots of people visiting , but during the week is fine."

Encountering La Jolla's Sharks
Beyond leopard sharks, visitors might also encounter stingrays in the sandy bottom. A common tip from locals and visitors alike is to practice the 'stingray shuffle' – dragging your feet as you walk through the water – to alert any stingrays to your presence and avoid accidental encounters. This simple precaution ensures a safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone.
The best time to see leopard sharks is typically from late spring through fall, when the warmer waters attract them closer to shore. This seasonal abundance makes La Jolla Shores a must-visit for marine life enthusiasts during these months.
The Magic of Bioluminescence
To witness this spectacle, visitors should plan their trip for dark, moonless nights, as the absence of moonlight enhances the visibility of the glow. While it's a natural occurrence and not guaranteed, checking local reports or social media for sightings can increase your chances. Some visitors have even reported being able to 'draw' with the bioluminescent plankton in the wet sand, adding a unique interactive element to the experience.
Experiencing bioluminescence is a fleeting and unforgettable event. It's a reminder of the hidden wonders of the ocean and a highlight for many who visit La Jolla Shores. Remember to be mindful of the environment and avoid disturbing the marine life while you marvel at this natural light show.
Navigating Crowds and Parking
To make the most of your visit and avoid the parking headache, arriving early in the morning is strongly advised. Weekdays generally offer a more relaxed experience compared to weekends. If you do end up parking on side streets, be prepared for slow-moving traffic as cars navigate the limited space. Some visitors have even reported giving up on finding parking altogether during peak times.
Despite the crowds, many visitors find the beach's beauty and amenities worth the effort. The key is to manage expectations and plan accordingly. Consider visiting during the shoulder seasons or on weekdays if you prefer a more tranquil beach day.
