"Absolutely beautiful. I don't go to San Diego without at least visiting thus mission. I've been to mass here a number of times as well. Always a peaceful visit and plenty for History buffs as well"

"As someone who grew up in California and remembers the whole missions projects and had a field trip to a mission it was great to return to one over a decade later.
So here is what you should know:
Ticket price: $8.00 (Tickets can be purchased in person)
Restrooms: Yes they have restrooms and yes they are clean.
Parking: There’s plenty, I’d say mostly because it’s hardly ever full (at least when I’ve gone)
Staff is friendly, there’s a gift shop mostly with religious pieces but also things like postcards and such.
Atmosphere is nice and peaceful regardless of whether you’re in the church, the garden, the museum, etc.
If you like history, art, and spirituality then this place is perfect because it blends those things wonderfully. They have a lovely garden with sculptures, plenty of art, and much history to read about and witness for yourself."

The Rich History of California's First Mission

The Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá holds the distinction of being the first of the 21 California missions, founded on July 16, 1769, by Father Junípero Serra. Its original location was near the Presidio of San Diego, but it was moved to its current site in 1774 to be closer to a reliable water source. This move was crucial for the mission's survival and its ability to support the surrounding indigenous Kumeyaay people.

The mission played a pivotal role in the Spanish colonization of California, serving as a religious and agricultural center. It was instrumental in the establishment of Spanish authority and the conversion of native populations to Christianity. However, this history is complex and includes the significant impact of European diseases and cultural disruption on the indigenous communities. Visitors can learn about this dual narrative through the exhibits and information provided on the grounds. Reddit

Today, the mission stands as a testament to California's early history, offering a glimpse into the lives of the friars and the indigenous people who lived and worked there. It continues to be an active parish, serving the local Catholic community while also functioning as a historical landmark and museum for visitors interested in learning about the state's origins. The blend of historical significance, religious practice, and serene beauty makes it a unique destination. Reddit
