What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Alcatraz Island is widely considered a must-visit SF attraction, lauded for its immersive audio tour, historical significance, and breathtaking bay views. While the ferry ride and island exploration are enjoyable, booking tickets well in advance is crucial due to high demand. Some visitors find the island itself a bit stark and the weather unpredictable, but the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive.
"buy tickets in advance (at least 3-4 days in advance), because they sell out very quickly (I was there in the summer)
The ship will pick you up from the pier and take you to the island to the prison, and then you will look around and take a walk. The island is beautiful, there are a lot of birds there, it seems like their home, it smells very fishy and it is windy there."

"A must visit San Francisco experience!
The ferry ride to Alcatraz Island was quick, relaxing, and offered beautiful views of the city skyline and calm waters.
Once on the island, I highly recommend purchasing the audio tour as it truly brings the prison’s history to life with powerful stories from former inmates and guards.
The grounds are well-maintained, and it’s clear that a lot of care goes into preserving the site. Staff were friendly, informative, and happy to answer questions. There’s also a nice gift shop at the end where you can pick up some unique souvenirs.
An unforgettable and educational experience, definitely worth the visit!"

"A truly unique experience you cannot get almost anywhere else. Setting foot on the island you’re confronted with these old, weathered buildings with so much history.
The cell house audio tour is a must when visiting as it gives much needed context and immersion to the prison from prisoners and guards that used to reside here.
There are a bunch of seagulls and black cormorants present on the island as well as flies so be warned.
From the top of the island, depending on the weather, you get a beautiful clear view of San Francisco"
