Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Embarcadero for its stunning waterfront views, particularly of the Bay Bridge, and the vibrant atmosphere of the Ferry Building Marketplace. It's considered a beautiful and iconic San Francisco experience, perfect for walks and enjoying the bay. However, some find the constant walking can become monotonous, and concerns about parking safety are noted.

"The Embarcadero is San Francisco’s eastern waterfront, stretching from the Bay Bridge to Fisherman’s Wharf. Its name comes from the Spanish word "embarcar," which means “to embark,” highlighting its history as a busy port.

Back in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Embarcadero was the heart of the city’s maritime trade. It was filled with warehouses, shipping piers, and the iconic Ferry Building, bustling with workers and travelers. Before the bridges were built, ferries were the main way people crossed the bay, making the Ferry Building one of the busiest transit terminals in the world.

After World War II, the waterfront saw a decline as shipping moved to Oakland, and in the 1950s, the construction of the Embarcadero Freeway cut off the city from its waterfront. Everything changed after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake when the damaged freeway was taken down, allowing the waterfront to open up again and sparking a major revitalization.

Today, the Embarcadero is one of the liveliest parts of San Francisco. It’s full of shops, restaurants, outdoor markets, the Exploratorium, Oracle Park, and the historic Ferry Building Marketplace. I live near the Fisherman’s Wharf end, and each day, I either walk along the Embarcadero to work or drive through it. With its palm trees, wide sidewalks, and beautiful views of the bay and bridges, it feels less like a commute and more like traveling through one of the city’s most iconic and scenic areas."
