What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Most Holy Redeemer Church is widely praised for its exceptionally inclusive and welcoming atmosphere, particularly for the LGBTQ+ community. Visitors consistently highlight the vibrant Masses, uplifting choir, and engaging homilies as deeply moving spiritual experiences. While most reviews are overwhelmingly positive, some mention historical negative experiences from the church's past as a school.
"I’m a frequent visitor to San Francisco and just wrapped up a three month internship here. When I started, I decided I would visit a new church every week. Most Holy Redeemer was the second church I visited, and it’s the one I found myself returning to every week I could.
MHR is exactly the kind of church I needed. I found it inclusive and comfortable yet filled with theological rigor. It is the only Catholic church I have ever visited in which the words “gay” or “trans” were used in a positive, non-derogatory way. As a queer person, and a cradle Catholic, it was great to have a space where I felt welcomed for both these aspects of myself. The homilies are challenging and full of energy, and for those staying longer, MHR has many ministries to volunteer for.
I really felt the love when attending Mass here. The choir was excellent and the congregation embraced it and each other. Even the visiting priests seemed happy to be there and full of love for the community.
I hope to return to Most Holy Redeemer soon. Thank you to everyone there for showing me this kind of Catholicism is still possible."

"Our Sunday was so busy with the relocation, I together with husband and brother found ourselves able to go to Mass later in the day. The only church that has Mass at late afternoon is Holy Redeemer. It is a blessing to have celebrated Eucharist here because it has such a welcoming, open-hearted church environment. Their bulletin says “The parish offers a spiritual home for senior citizens and youth, single people and families; those who are straight, gay, lesbian, and transgender; the healthy and the sick, particularly persons with HIV.”
The priest Fr Matt himself has that loving, welcoming presence in him. Choir music is so beautiful; I found myself at one point feeling lifted up to the heavens. On my way out, the male usher in orange sweatshirt gave me a huge smile and we had a brief yet lively conversation. I would say it is not by accident that I had my Eucharistic celebration here on my first Sunday in San Francisco. God’s love is surely evident in His Most Holy Redeemer Church."

"On my first visit, I saw two loving and amazing dads baptize their child. A sight I never thought I would ever see in my lifetime, and I never cried so wholeheartedly from the heart in a long time. Growing up Catholic, gay, and serving in our military, has taught me alot about life and how to live it......and I want to live it with love"
