wandered each hall, a peaceful & somewhat eerie feeling despite the ubiquitous elegance; also fascinating to see what people keep in their plots or read different quotes/inscriptions of those passed; highly recommend stopping here, it was an incredibly grey day when we went, which added to the atmosphere #sanfrancisco #sanfranciscolife #sanfranciscobayarea #sanfranciscocalifornia #sfbayarea #sftik...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the San Francisco Columbarium for its stunning beauty, peaceful atmosphere, and the compassionate support of its staff. It's described as a unique historical landmark and a serene oasis in the city, perfect for reflection and remembrance.

"The San Francisco columbarium in the experience that we had working with the staff was amazing. Esther, Kordell, and Grace did a phenomenal job. My uncle lived in San Francisco, and the rest of the family lived on the East Coast. Esther was communicative easily accessible by phone and was empathetic and compassionate when we met with her in person to finalize everything. The columbarium itself is stunning. It is a special place to have a celebration of life For your loved one. The day of the service, the staff was so accommodating. They were there for anything that we needed in an unobtrusive way I highly recommend Having A celebration of life at the columbarium in San Francisco. It’s truly a memory I’ll never forget and I think my uncle would be proud."

"Said good bye to a friend in this beautiful place just a few hundred feet from bustle of the city a literal oasis in the concrete jungle of San Francisco. The impressive structure was built in 1898 but kept up meticulously like the first day it was opened if that's possible. There are 4 levels containing thousands that choose this as their final resting place for eternity. I was told by the very kind director that a little girl that died and rests here had been afraid of the dark so a special light was installed and is always stays on for her. Among the famous people here is Harvey Milk and the reverend Cecil Williams has reserved his place for his final resting place."

"The Columbarium is such a Beautiful place and landmark in San Francisco. We purchased a niche for our family. Recently my Mother passed and we had the services and reception there. The customer that we received was 100 percent A1. Our contact person was Elliot Franks. His customer service is unmatched. In today's climate customer is a rarity. Elliot was patient and executed all my requests with grace. He went above and beyond to make our stress level come down.

Very pleased

A Glimpse into San Francisco's Past

The Neptune Society Columbarium stands as a poignant reminder of San Francisco's unique history with its cemeteries. Once, the Lone Mountain area was home to four large cemeteries. However, in the early 20th century, the city banned burials within its limits, leading to the removal of most cemeteries. The Columbarium, built in 1898, is one of the few remaining structures from this era, preserving a significant piece of the city's past. TikTok It's a testament to architectural preservation and a unique historical artifact.

Designed by Bernard Cahill, the same architect behind earlier mausoleums, this neoclassical structure is a marvel. Inside, you'll find four levels adorned with thousands of ornate copper and brass urns, each holding the cremated remains of San Francisco's pioneers and notable citizens. Beyond the urns, many niches feature touching shadow boxes filled with personal mementos, offering intimate glimpses into the lives of those interred. TikTok This blend of grand architecture and personal history makes it a deeply moving place to explore.

The staff at the Columbarium are frequently praised for their compassion and professionalism, especially during difficult times. They ensure the space is maintained meticulously, creating a peaceful and beautiful environment for remembrance and reflection. [^Review] It's a place that evokes a sense of history, art, and quiet contemplation, making it a must-visit for those interested in San Francisco's heritage. TikTok

The building is structured across multiple levels, each offering a different perspective and collection of memorials. Take your time to wander through each hall, as you'll discover unique inscriptions, architectural details, and personal tributes. TikTok The atmosphere is generally quiet and contemplative, so it's best to maintain a respectful demeanor throughout your visit.

When it comes to photography, the Columbarium offers many visually striking opportunities. The interplay of light and shadow, the intricate metalwork of the urns, and the detailed carvings provide excellent subjects. However, remember that this is a place of rest for many.
